TOP 100 best varieties of tomatoes from the site Modern Estate

The number of the most favorite varieties of tomatoes (according to our amateur tomato growers) is not calculated in just a few or even in dozens. Among this diversity, identifying the 15 best varieties was incredibly difficult. We chose those that were mentioned more often than others.

As you know, there are no comrades for taste and color. The same situation applies to tomatoes. Some people like sour ones, others almost like sugary ones; Some people serve tomatoes for canning, while others grow them only for quick consumption. Some people like to grow low-growing varieties (so that they don’t need to be pinched or tied up), while others are simply in love with two-meter giants. Thanks to such diverse tastes, our selection of the best tomatoes of 2021 also turned out to be varied.

Sergeant Pepper

One of the most beloved tomato varieties by our club members is Sergeant Pepper. This is a tall, productive variety with fruits of a rather unusual red-violet color. The fruits are shaped like a heart, juicy and tasty.

Galina Vergasova: “Well, what’s a garden without Sergeant Pepper? I give these tomatoes to my friends. Everyone loves the unusual coloring and heart shape.”

Lidia Domnikova: “That's for sure! A sergeant is always needed. Decorating the garden!

Arina Erdman: “Sergeant Pepper is a variety of pink-striped salad tomatoes, aromatic, with a piquant taste and a pleasant, persistent aftertaste.”

Arina Yariga: “Sergeant Pepper is the favorite of the favorites!”

Conclusion

Tomato is one of the most common vegetables in the world. Of course, such popularity is quite easy to justify: there is practically no area where it is not used.

You can start simply with the fact that tomatoes are widely used as food, and in the cuisine of many different peoples of the world. Secondly, the beneficial properties of tomatoes are legendary. They are equally successfully used for the prevention of diseases and for treatment as a folk remedy. It is interesting that today there are varieties of tomatoes that are specially grown not for their direct purpose - for consumption - but as a decoration for the garden or windowsill. As a rule, decorative varieties are responsible for this.

Thus, tomatoes absolutely deservedly occupy one of the first places among all crops grown by humans. This is also evidenced by the fact that today more than 10,000 varieties of this fruit have been bred.

De Barao

The well-known and beloved variety De Barao has not given up its position for many years now. The reasons are high productivity, low maintenance requirements and disease resistance. Even in less than favorable years, De Barao does not leave summer residents without a harvest.

Our tomato growers could not say unequivocally which De Barao is better - black or red. Both one and the other have fans.

Inna Tom'yuk: “De Barao black is a variety that has been proven over the years. He never gets sick, and the tomatoes are very tasty.”

Vera Stepanova: “Black De Barao is tasty, productive, suitable for canning.”

Galina Naliuhhina: “I agree that the black one tastes more elegant, but when preserved, its skin bursts and the tomato becomes like porridge. And fresh, for food, it is ideal. And yes, very productive. But my red De Barao is strewn with fruits and is ideal for canning - I used them to make tomatoes in their own juice.”

Izida Zotova: “I like it too. The varieties change, but the red De Barao remains.”

Galina Voskova: “This year was not very fruitful for me, but De Barao was pleased with the black one. As the first one began to bear fruit, the last one finished, it didn’t hurt at all, it’s good for preservation.”

Another old-timer in the tomato world, which has been a favorite of summer residents for many years, is the Bull's Heart variety, and there are different types of it: red, gold, and amber.

Svetlana Mikhnevich: “Bull’s heart Black is a salad tomato with a rich taste.”

Maria Bolocan: “I will definitely plant Bull’s Heart Golden (large, a lot of fruits, the flesh on the cut with orange stripes) and Bull’s Heart Amber (this year I was very pleased with its taste and appearance).”

Is a tomato a berry or a vegetable?

Tomato fruit
Surprisingly, you probably won’t find another crop on the planet about which there would be so much controversy. The fact is that there is no consensus on what tomatoes should be classified as: berries, fruits or vegetables.

Botany clearly shows that tomatoes are berries .

The following characteristics of a tomato play a key role in this definition: propagation by seeds, and the fruits are eaten mainly raw. We can say that for this reason, it is officially more correct to consider tomatoes as berries.

But much confusion arose due to a number of factors:

  • For example, since 1893 in the United States, a court decision has decided to consider tomatoes as vegetables. Although there is reason to believe that this decision was significantly influenced by the thirst for profit, because at that time vegetables exported from the United States were subject to duties (i.e., they brought income to the treasury), and the export of berries and fruits, on the contrary, was free of duties.
  • Since 2001, the European Union has officially decided to classify tomatoes as fruits.
  • Let us add to this that in Russian literature (agricultural textbooks including) tomatoes are considered exclusively as a vegetable crop.

Brad's Atomic Grape

If you're a fan of tomatoes with unusual colors, Brad's Atomic Grape is for you. It is impossible to describe the color of their fruits in one word: they are red-brown with stripes of green and purple. The fruits are plum-shaped and small in size. The bush bears fruit until frost.

Tatiana Kir: “Next year I will plant mainly fleshy cocktail grapes for drying, among which, most likely, will be Atomic Breda grapes and Pear orange. They were swept away."

Svetlana Mikhnevich: “Brad’s atomic grapes are a sweet tomato. Good yield, excellent shelf life.”

Caring for adult plants from A to Z

Which watering is better?

Tomatoes do not tolerate excess moisture and stagnation of water ; before the ovaries appear, it is recommended to only lightly moisten the soil, avoiding drying out. After the ovaries appear, water once a week at the rate of a liter of water per bush.

When watering, you can add a couple of pinches of wood ash to the water in a bucket. If automated irrigation is used, sprinkle the beds with ash. This will boost the plants' immunity and accelerate their growth.

Loosening

The first loosening is carried out immediately after planting the seedlings in the ground , the next ones at intervals of two weeks. This helps retain moisture and improves oxygen access to the roots.

We talked about the soil requirements for growing tomatoes, as well as how to keep the soil in good condition in your garden here.

Top dressing

When adding nutrients, it is important to ensure that the amount of nitrogen does not exceed phosphorus and potassium. Feeding is carried out every two weeks. For ten liters of liquid add:

  • 15 gr. ammonium nitrate;
  • 50 gr. superphosphate;
  • 30 gr. potassium

Bush formation

In order for tomatoes to ripen faster, you need to carry out pinching , leaving the main stem and removing excess shoots. The procedure must be carried out regularly

Protection from pests and diseases

To prevent the plant from suffering from all sorts of ailments and pests, you need to observe crop rotation, dig up and disinfect the soil before planting, remove diseased plants to protect healthy bushes, and prevent drops of water from falling on the leaves during watering.

Also, when choosing seed, it is recommended to give preference to strong varieties and hybrids that are resistant to diseases and pests.

If the pests still reach the plant, then you need to move on to more radical methods. Use products that can be purchased in specialized stores.

We invite you to watch a video about protecting tomatoes from pests and diseases:

Selection of tomato varieties for open ground for 2021

Author: Tomat.TOP. February 15, 2021 Category: Tomatoes: varieties and hybrids.

Selection of varieties of low-growing, standard, determinate, semi-determinate, super-determinate tomatoes for growing in open ground. Review of tomato seeds for 2021.

February... Spring is coming. We are all looking forward to spring.

Most gardeners are thinking about what varieties of tomatoes they will grow this year.

I also decided to choose the tomato varieties that I will grow this 2021 season.

I don’t grow everything, I have my own preferences and requirements. Some varieties are new, some are already time-tested. Perhaps, after looking at the varieties of tomatoes that I chose for myself, you will like something too.

Video - Choosing tomato varieties for open ground!

First, we will discuss my choice of low-growing, standard, super-determinate, semi-determinate and determinate varieties of tomatoes, and I will talk about indeterminate varieties later.

When you plant a large number of tomatoes, you understand that you may not have enough energy to care for them, and that is why most of the plot is occupied by less demanding and, as many say, varieties for the lazy, standard, super-determinate and determinate tomatoes.

I have always liked low-growing tomatoes, because they are capable of producing a harvest of delicious tomatoes and at the same time require a minimum of attention. Unlike tall varieties, which, of course, are more productive, but at the same time require special conditions and constant care.

Therefore, personally, most of my garden is occupied by low-growing varieties of tomatoes for open ground. And it’s good that now there are a lot of varieties that have good yields and at the same time have excellent taste.

It’s worth noting right away that I’m a fan of pink and black tomatoes, I grow red ones quite rarely, this doesn’t mean that I don’t like red ones at all, but pink and black ones have a special status for me.

My main parameter for choosing a tomato variety is taste! Everything else is secondary.

And so what varieties of determinate tomatoes have I chosen to grow in 2021? Let's start with the smallest, stunted varieties.

Tomato Superklusha.

This is a variety from the already well-known Klush series. I do not grow the Klusha variety, but prefer the pink-fruited Superklusha variety.

The Superklusha tomato is a standard variety, mid-early, 30-40 cm high, and does not require shaping or pinching. The fruits are pink, round, weighing from 150 to 250 grams. Very tasty and suitable for both salad and canning. In seedlings, this variety does not stretch, but because even as an adult it grows only up to 40 cm.

I have been growing the Superklusha variety for a long time and am completely satisfied with it. A small bush from which you will get tasty, medium-sized, pink tomatoes in almost any weather and in any conditions. In general, the variety has never disappointed, so most likely it will always be grown on my plot. Moreover, no special work is required; it grows almost on its own.

Tomato "Golden Klusha"

The “Golden Klusha” tomato is a new variety; I haven’t grown it myself yet, but, in fact, it’s the same Super Klusha, only yellow-fruited. Therefore, I really want to try it to know what the “Golden Klusha” will be like. In general, there are very few such low-growing yellow-fruited tomato varieties; they are mostly tall, so the Golden Chestnut will come in very handy.

Tomato Em Champion.

The Em Champion variety is mid-season, determinate, only 50-55 cm high, recommended for open ground, like “Superklusha”, but it already needs a little pinching and tying to a support.

The main feature of the Em Champion variety is its high yield and large fruit. It’s not for nothing that he’s called Em Champion.

You will be hard pressed to find a low-growing tomato variety that can produce up to 7 kg of fruit per plant. Moreover, with the correct formation of the bush, the fruits can weigh up to 800 grams. The average fruit weight is 350-400 grams. And besides, the taste of this variety is also all right. The tomatoes are fleshy, sugary, pink with good taste. True, the fruits are not stored very well; they are best consumed immediately or processed, for example, into juice.

Tomato Pink Honey

The Pink Honey variety is a tomato that has already been proven and loved by many. Mid-season, determinate tomato up to 70 cm high; in a greenhouse it can grow up to 1.20 m.

This variety is loved for its high yield, good disease resistance and large, tasty pink fruits. This is one of those tomatoes that is worth growing every season.

The fruits are heart-shaped, pink, up to 1000 grams. The bush must be tied up because... there are a lot of fruits. Productivity up to 6 kg per plant.

In general, I recommend the Pink Honey variety to everyone.

Tomato Hospitable pink

Many people know and love the Khlebosolny variety, and Khlebosolny pink is a sibling of this variety only with tastier pink fruits.

This is a determinate variety, for open ground, up to 60 cm in height. It is not necessary to plant it, but it will have to be tied up because This small bush produces fruits weighing up to 600 grams.

The Khlebosolny pink variety, like its brother the Khlebosolny variety, is liked by many because of its good resistance to adverse weather conditions and the ability to produce a large harvest of tasty large-fruited tomatoes in almost any weather.

Tomato Pani Yana

The Pani Yana variety is a pink-fruited, early-ripening, super-determinate tomato, up to 50 cm high, it requires pinching only up to the first cluster. At the same time, the Pani Yan tomato has delicious pink tomatoes weighing up to 250 grams. Personally, I have not grown this variety yet because... This is a new product and I want to check the yield, taste and resistance to diseases. After all, you won’t know until you try it yourself, but I like these small tomatoes with pink fruits.

Tomato Wolf Fang

Tomato Wolf Fang is an early-ripening, determinate variety, up to 60 cm high, requiring minimal bush formation. Tolerates temperature changes and low temperatures well. This variety is new for 2021, not everyone has been able to appreciate it yet.

The fruits are red, heart-pepper-shaped, sweet, weighing 120-170 grams. They are very suitable for canning and have a good taste when fresh.

The variety's yield is good, up to 12 kg per square meter, and it has a long fruiting period.

Tomato Sugarloaf

The Sugarloaf variety is new for 2021, a large-fruited, mid-early, determinate variety, up to 80 cm high.

The variety is resistant to diseases and tolerates various weather conditions.

The fruits are large, weighing from 400 to 600 grams, pink, fleshy, sugary, very aromatic. The main purpose is salad. Productivity up to 10 kg. per square meter.

Tomato Demidov.

The Demidov variety is now well known to many. A mid-season, standard variety, up to 60 cm high, which does not require pinching, was liked by many for its unpretentiousness and good pink fruits.

The fruits of the Demidov variety are round, pink-red in color, with good taste, weighing 150-200 grams.

Tomato Nastenka.

Tomato Nastenka is a popular mid-season low-growing variety that many people love for its unpretentiousness and reliability; from it you will always get a harvest of round, heart-shaped, pink-red tomatoes.

The bush is standard and does not require pinching; to obtain an early harvest, it is better to form a bush of 3-4 stems.

By the way, the “Nastenka” variety, like, for example, the “Superklusha”, “Klusha”, Zolotaya Klusha”, “Demidov”, “Em Champion” varieties, feel better in open ground; they do not need a greenhouse at all.

The fruits of the Nastenka tomato weigh up to 200 grams, are universally used, have a good taste, one might say classic for pink tomatoes.

Tomato Parsley gardener

Parsley gardener is a mid-early variety, 50-60 cm high, practically does not require pinching, the harvest yields uniformly, and produces up to 6 kg of fruit per square meter.

This is also already a popular variety; many people like it not only for its unpretentiousness and short stature, but also for its pink fruits, oval-elongated, weighing up to 200 grams, which are tasty fresh and are perfect for canning.

Tomato Ballerina

Tomato Ballerina is a pink-fruited, mid-early variety, up to 60 cm high.

There is a variety with red fruits which is also called Ballerina, but it is a pink-fruited tomato.

The fruits of the Ballerina tomato are bullet-shaped, weighing from 60 to 120 grams, with good taste, perfect for canning and for fresh consumption.

Tomato Fatima

The Fatima variety is also one of those tomatoes that do not require a lot of care and in the end you get a good harvest of pink fruits from 400 to 800 grams.

The tomato is early ripening, determinate, the height of the bush is 60-70 cm, if you form a bush, you will get larger fruits, it is necessary to do a garter.

The fruits are heart-shaped, pink, fleshy, with good taste, very few seeds inside, and never crack.

Of course, instead of this variety, Pink Honey tomato would be quite enough, but I like variety.

Tomato Nightingale the Robber

The Nightingale-Robber tomato is an early-ripening, low-growing variety, up to 65 cm high, that does not require formation and tolerates drought, frost and other natural phenomena well.

Within 95-100 days after germination, you will be able to harvest ripe tomatoes.

Pink, round fruits weighing from 140 to 160 grams, with good taste, universal purpose. The yield of the variety is up to 10 kg per square meter.

This variety is very suitable for beginner and weekend gardeners and, of course, for those who do not want to spend a lot of time growing tomatoes.

Tomato Silver Fox

I found the Silver Fox variety quite by accident, from a manufacturer unknown to me, and it became interesting to see what kind of variety it was. I was attracted to the Silver Fox variety by the appearance of the fruits: they are bicolored, striped, pink with yellow-orange stripes, oval in shape with a sharp nose. Fruit weight is 80-100t grams. The main purpose of tomatoes is preservation, but when fresh they also promise good taste.

In addition, it is stated that the variety is early ripening and ripens 85 days after germination and is suitable for growing without seedlings.

The variety is determinate, the height of the bush is up to 70 cm, and requires minimal shaping. Resistant to diseases and tolerates heat well.

There is very little information about the variety; it is quite possible that it has another name. In the 2021 season, we will definitely check what kind of tomato this Silver Fox is.

Tomato Chocolate miracle

The Chocolate Miracle tomato is a medium-early, large-fruited variety with fruits the color of milk chocolate.

This is a determinate variety, up to 80 cm high in open ground and up to 1.5 meters in a greenhouse. The bush requires shaping and pinching.

The “Chocolate Miracle” variety is resistant to diseases and quite productive. The main feature of the variety is its very sweet and very beautiful chocolate-colored fruits, flat-rounded, ribbed, weighing from 250 to 800 grams when properly shaped.

A truly delicious variety to grow.

Tomato Chocolate Zebra

The “Chocolate Zebra” tomato is a new, determinate striped tomato, up to 1-1.2 meters high, which can be grown both in open ground and in greenhouses. The bush requires shaping and pinching. The seed manufacturer claims that the first flower cluster begins after the 5th leaf.

Of course, the main feature of the “Chocolate Zebra” variety is the appearance and excellent taste of the fruit. The fruits are flat-round, very beautiful striped in color, weighing from 200 to 400 grams, very fleshy and sweet.

In general, mostly indeterminate varieties have such striped tomatoes, so I really wanted to try just such a determinate striped one.

Many people know such tomato varieties as Striped Chocolate, Amur Tiger, Vintage, but they are all indeterminate, but Chocolate Zebra is a determinate variety. Let's see how it grows in open ground.

This is my choice of standard, determinate and semi-determinate varieties of tomatoes. What varieties of tomatoes do you prefer?

There are a lot of bags of tomato seeds from, it just so happens that in our region this is the most popular seed producer, but most of the seeds are, of course, our own, and some are from private collectors.
