Tomato Shasta: description of the variety, cultivation and care of the plant with photos

As a rule, collection varieties of tomatoes do not take up much space in the garden. Just a few bushes to enjoy an unusual taste or appearance. Most of the land is allocated for universal crops, which will be used in salads and for seaming. Among such universals, a new product has recently appeared with a very loud name - Vladyka. Its authors: Donskaya M.K., Gubko V.N., Salmina I.S., Zhitnekovskaya O.A. Our hero was registered in the State Register of Breeding Achievements of Russia recently - in 2015. Applicant and originator - Federal State Budgetary Institution "Federal Research Center Institute of Cytology and Genetics of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences." The variety has received permission for cultivation in all regions of the country. Recommended for film greenhouses on private farms. Not a hybrid.

Description of the variety

During the fruiting period, a large and powerful bush is hung with beautiful, aligned pink tomatoes. The Barmaley variety is an early variety, included in the State Register, and has shown itself very well both in the middle zone and in the regions of the North-West, beyond the Urals.

The fruits are round, slightly flattened, with thin, pink skin. They are used both for preparations (pasta, sauces) and for salads. Thanks to the early ripening period, harvesting can be done as early as 98-100 days, which is very suitable for regions with short summers. Almost everyone who grew this variety notes its excellent taste and very beautiful appearance.

Taste qualities of fruits

Shasta F1 tomatoes are round in shape and bright red in color. The taste is excellent, when ripe it is sweet and sour. Brix (the amount of dry matter in fruits) is 6.5 - 7, the density is high. The skin of the fruit is durable. The weight of tomatoes in a ripe state is 65 - 70 g.

Shasta F1 hybrid for universal use. Suitable for fresh consumption, for processing into juice and puree, and also ideal for canning as a whole, since the skin does not burst under the influence of temperatures. The transportability of the hybrid is high.

Main characteristics

The Barmaley tomato is recommended for growing both in open ground beds and in greenhouses. Of course, to obtain a harvest in areas of risky agriculture (Siberia, the Urals, the European North of Russia), it is advisable to grow this variety in greenhouses. In the southern regions, cultivation is practiced directly in the open air.

The plant is tall, reaching approximately 180-200 cm in greenhouses; in ridges the height of the bush may be slightly lower. The foliage is medium, the leaf is ordinary, dark green in color.

ON A NOTE! The Barmaley variety is part of the group of indeterminate tomatoes, so bush formation, pinching and staking are mandatory.

The variety is famous for its good yield and high taste. Also, many are attracted by the appearance of the fruit - pink, smooth tomatoes look very beautiful, which is important for sale.

The first brush is formed above the 8th sheet, then the brushes go through two sheets. At the moment of technical maturity, the fruits have a dark green color, and when ripe they have a rich pink color. The stalk may have a dark green spot, which disappears when the tomato is fully ripe.

The weight of Barmaley is also quite suitable, the average weight of the fruit is about 200-250 grams. The skin is tender, but dense, glossy, the flesh is very fleshy and juicy. The taste is pronounced tomato, sweet and sour, there is a light pleasant aroma. There are very few seeds in the pulp, so tomatoes of this variety are ideal for preparing salads.

Characteristics of Shasta tomato, cultivation and pest control

Some of the important criteria when choosing a tomato variety are high yield and disease resistance. Tomato Shasta F1 has these qualities. The variety is one of the earliest ripening species in the world.

Characteristics of the variety

This variety is a hybrid, which is intended for cultivation on an industrial scale. It is also perfect for small gardens. Accordingly, harvesting can be done either manually or mechanically.

The Shasta tomato variety has the following description and characteristics:

  1. Early fruit ripening. It takes about 90 days from planting to ripening.
  2. High yield. One bush bears a large number of clusters of fruits.
  3. Tomato ripening occurs simultaneously.
  4. Sufficient resistance to diseases.
  5. The bushes are strong and belong to the determinate low-growing type. The height of the bush is about 80 cm. This feature allows you to grow tomatoes in the fields.
  6. They have the same round shape and size, tomatoes can weigh from 60 to 90 g.
  7. Shasta fruits have a significant amount of dry matter, which makes them elastic.
  8. The color of the vegetable is red, the peel is dense.
  9. Tomatoes tolerate transportation well.

These characteristics make it possible to use Shasta tomatoes both for commercial purposes and for individual small-scale farming. Reviews from farmers indicate that this variety is excellent for obtaining tomato juice, paste, canning whole fruits, and also for fresh consumption.

Growing

Growing fruits can be done in two ways:

  • without seedlings;
  • using seedlings.

The first method is different in that the seeds are immediately sown in the beds; suitable weather conditions are required: the air temperature during the day is not lower than +20°...+23 °C, and at night - not lower than +16 °C. Seeds need to be sown, taking into account the future growth of the bush. It is recommended to make the distance between the holes 40-50 cm.

Reviews of tomato Barmaley

Svetlana, Krasnoyarsk

I love pink tomatoes, every year I plant both old varieties and some new ones. I have been growing the Barmaley variety from Sibsad for two years, I really liked the taste of tomatoes and the yield. The fruits are large, about 200 grams each, and fleshy. There are usually 4-5 fruits in a cluster, these pink “pigs” hang and are pleasing to the eye. I didn’t pick them green, I let them ripen on the bush. But even this did not particularly affect the yield; I removed about 12 kg from one square meter. They don’t overripe on the bush and are one of the best tomatoes for salads.

Elizaveta, Belgorod

I planted the Barmaley variety for three years in a row. A very tasty tomato, but one problem - my fruits were very cracked. Of all the varieties and hybrids (and I have more than 30 of them), these are the ones that always crack for some reason. I control the watering and maintenance of the system, but this is a misfortune. I didn’t plant it last year, but I bought the seeds again in the new season, but the tomato tastes good anyway. I also liked the yield.

Tall tomatoes for the greenhouse

I definitely plant the listed varieties, but there are also some that I just liked, and I periodically grow them in the greenhouse, but I have not become a fan of them. Of the indeterminates, I like the raceme varieties the most. Again, this is primarily because they look beautiful on the bush. There are only three varieties, and each has a special reason to grow it.

“Intuition F1” is a mid-season hybrid, but I would classify it as a late-season hybrid. Not only does it reach harvest ripeness only by mid-August, but biological maturity also comes quite late. Some specimens of these tomatoes ripen even until the end of October. But, on the other hand, this is convenient because as a result, we have our own fresh tomatoes at home for a very long time. That's why I sow it in February.

Rice. 12. Photo from the end of July, but the fruits have not yet begun to ripen.

But “Intuition F1” is very easy. This hybrid is great for freezing for future use. In winter, I make pizza and frittata with them, as they do not defrost like porridge, but retain their meatiness well when cut.

Rice. 13. The fruits are all smooth and beautiful.

Rice. 14. In this form, I send “Intuition F1” to deep freeze.

“Scarlet Candles” is a cluster variety, mid-season. They don’t have a special taste, but what a shape! Looks impressive in preparations with cucumbers. However, this is why I grow them. It’s nice to admire such a jar later in the winter.

Rice. 15. The length of “Scarlet Candles” is almost like pickling cucumbers.

Rice. 16. “Scarlet candles” look neat, they all have a characteristic “spout”.

“De Barao” is quite late-ripening; I sow it earlier than the bulk of tomatoes. I really like it in preparations, it does not crack and is very tasty, both fresh and pickled.

Rice. 17. "De Barao" is resistant to disease. I always plant it on the north side, tying it above the entrance to the greenhouse, because it is very tall, and the upper tier ripens even in the last ten days of August, despite the first cold nights.

Rice. 18. The fruits are beautiful, all as one.

I have tried a great variety of salad varieties, I still want to find the most delicious one. Of the unusually colored tomatoes, I really like the taste of Malachite Box and Black Prince . Both are tall and require pinching, gartering, and formation into 1-2 stems, but the effort is worth it, the fruits are magnificent. “Black Prince” is dark burgundy when fully ripe.

Rice. 19. “Malachite box” in biological maturity – green.

Advantages and disadvantages of tomato variety Barmaley

The tomato has received a “registration” in the plots of many gardeners, since among its “advantages”:

  • productivity;
  • excellent taste;
  • early ripening.

These three advantages of the Barmaley variety are the main ones, and in most reviews, summer residents focus on them. We also include the following advantages:

  • large fruit (up to 300 grams);
  • excellent commercial properties;
  • resistance to temperature changes;
  • the ability to grow the variety in almost all regions of the country (subject to compliance with basic agricultural techniques).

This tomato is suitable for salads - meaty, juicy, tasty, although it can also be used for making juices and sauces. The color of the products will not be as rich as those from red fruits, but the taste will be excellent.

As for the disadvantages, we note here the tendency of tomato fruits to crack (although this often happens precisely because of non-compliance with the agricultural practices of the Indets), as well as the need to form and garter the bush.

The variety requires good nutrition and responds well to complex fertilizing, so in order to get a high yield (up to 10-12 kg per square meter), the tomato must be “fed.” Also, do not forget about disease prevention; Barmaley is susceptible to some infections. But timely processing of bushes, as well as early ripening, will help avoid diseases.

Agricultural technology of tomato Shasta F1

Description of the Shasta tomato variety, growing and caring for the plant

Gardeners have already appreciated the tomato hybrid Shasta f1 for its early ripening of fruits. Its manufacturer is American. At the moment, these tomatoes are the earliest ripening in the world - only 90 days pass from planting the seeds in the ground to receiving ripe fruits. The remaining characteristics of the hybrid are described below.

Description of the bush and fruits

The type is determinant, the height of an adult plant is only 80 centimeters, so it is recommended to grow in open areas. The bush is powerful with a large number of ovaries. The hybrid is produced for professional cultivation on large areas. The fruits are used for processing, sale and fresh consumption.

  • Ripe Shasta tomatoes weigh on average 65 to 85 grams.
  • The fruits are smooth and round in shape.
  • The bushes ripen berries of almost the same size, ideal for whole-fruit pickling and sale.

When ripe, the tomato has a scarlet color. The pulp contains a large amount of dry matter. The taste is tomato, sweet, with sourness, tomatoes are ideal for producing tomato paste and juice.

Positive qualities of tomato

The key positive qualities of the hybrid include:

  • early and friendly ripening of fruits;
  • high-quality and uniform tomatoes;
  • good product and transport qualities;
  • possibility of growing in large areas;
  • the hybrid is ideal for canning whole fruits (does not crack);
  • resistant to fusarium and verticillium.

Planting, growing and caring for plants

Due to the low growth and early ripening of fruits, tomatoes are planted with seeds in the main place without first producing seedlings.

The seeds are planted at a distance of 50 centimeters from each other, several in one hole, and the beds are covered with film until germination. The first planting differs in different regions, but the air temperature during the day should remain between 20–24 degrees, and at night from 16 and above.

To obtain high-quality fruits, the soil is fed with organic fertilizers before sowing. Water as needed during dry summers. If there are a large number of tomatoes on the bush, the plant should be tied up. When there is a gust of wind, the stem will break under the weight. The density of the fruit shell and smooth ripening allow plantations to be harvested mechanically. The hybrid does not require pinching or pruning leaves, so the description of plant care is kept to a minimum:

  • weeding;
  • fertilizer;
  • loosening the soil;
  • fungicide treatment.

Recommendations for growing tomato variety Barmaley

Having read in the description about the high yield of the variety, many gardeners purchase Barmaley seeds and are disappointed when they do not get results. Reason: improper care, lack of quality plant nutrition, unsuitable conditions for growing productive large-fruited tomatoes. Simple recommendations will help you avoid mistakes.

Growing seedlings

Tomato seeds (especially if they are obtained independently) require mandatory preparation. The Barmaley variety is no exception, so before sowing, the seeds are disinfected, soaked in special preparations, and only then germinated and sown. Such procedures should not be neglected; they will take a little time, but the seedlings, and then the adult plants, will be strong and healthy.

  1. Disinfection is carried out using potassium permanganate (soaking for 15-20 minutes), aloe juice.
  2. To improve germination, soak the seeds in ash infusion (for about 8-10 hours), in Epin, Zircon (act strictly according to the instructions).
  3. Sprout in a cloth moistened with water (gauze will do).

After this, the seeds are sown.

The timing is determined based on the moon phase calendar, the climate of the region, and also takes into account where the tomato will grow (open ground, greenhouse).

The usual time for sowing tomatoes of this ripening period is March. When planted permanently, the age of the seedlings should be about 60 days.

ON A NOTE! Seeds are sown in common boxes or in separate cups. For the first option, a dive is then carried out (when the seedlings have two true leaves), for the second, soil is gradually added or the seedlings are transplanted into a container of larger volume.

Diving is carried out so that the seedlings do not stretch out and the root system is formed strong and powerful. Before picking, tomatoes are not fed, but after transplanting, after about 8-10 days, the bushes can be fed (complex fertilizer, Kemira composition).

It is advisable to combine the application of nutrient solutions with watering, and do not forget to carefully loosen the soil of the plants. On cloudy days, it is recommended to provide additional lighting to the plants. For tomatoes, you need to choose well-lit window sills, try to arrange containers with seedlings so that they stand freely and all plants have enough light. Be sure to ventilate the room, but avoid drafts.

In about 14-15 days (and if the weather permits, even earlier), the tomatoes begin to be taken out into the fresh air. A simple hardening procedure will help the plants get used to new conditions, and they will not experience stress during transplantation.

The stay time starts at about 15-20 minutes, increasing it later to several hours. In a warm spring, tomatoes can be left outside all day, making sure that they do not fall under the bright direct rays of the scorching spring sun.

Planting is carried out in May or in the first days of June (taking into account the weather), covering the plants with non-woven materials. The scheme is three Barmaley bushes per square meter. When growing this variety on ridges in open ground, you can plant 4 plants per 1 square meter. meter.
