Description and characteristics of the variety
The most shelf-stable varieties of tomatoes are stored throughout the fall and part of the winter. This is Giraffe, Long Keeper. The bushes are hardy to adverse weather conditions and resistant to pathogens.
The Lezhkiy tomato variety bears fruits with the following characteristics:
- average weight 100-120 g;
- orange pulp;
- the skin does not crack.
Description of the tomato variety Lezhkiy, reviews, photos
Late-ripening, determinate tomato variety for long-term storage. Recommended for cultivation in open ground and greenhouses.
The bush is spreading, 0.7-1 meters high, requires tying to a support and pinching. The best results were obtained when forming a plant with 3 stems. 5-6 fruits are formed in the brush.
Fruit characteristics
The fruits are flat-round, dense, red-orange in color at maturity, weighing 100-120 grams, not prone to cracking. Like most tomatoes for storage, they have a very mediocre taste.
It is advisable to sow seeds for seedlings 65-70 days before the intended planting in the ground. When planting seedlings in a permanent place per 1 sq. 4-6 plants are placed per meter.
Advantages of the variety: resistance to major tomato diseases, high content of dry matter in the fruit. Fruits picked green in August-September are stored until the New Year.
The yield of the variety is average.
Originator: Zedek.
This is a natural variety of tomato. Therefore, we recommend taking seeds from a ripe fruit and using them for planting in subsequent seasons.
If you grew Lezhkiy tomatoes, please write whether you liked them or not. What was the yield and taste of the fruits like under your climatic conditions? If possible, attach a photo of the entire bush or individual fruits. Thank you!
Your reviews of the Lezhkiy tomato and additions to the description will help many gardeners evaluate this variety objectively and decide whether it is worth planting or not.
Tomato varieties for long-term storage
Every summer season I always try new varieties of tomatoes.
Everyone in our family loves salads made from fresh tomatoes, so I have long wanted to grow ones that could be stored for as long as possible. Last year I was very pleased with the “Gift of Autumn”, “Long Keeper” and “Giraffe” . The main feature of these varieties is that their fruits have a long shelf life and can be stored until spring. We finished the last tomatoes in early February, so there was no way to check how much longer they could have been kept in such excellent condition. These tomatoes are late ripening. I planted them for seedlings at the same time as other tomatoes. I collected the fruits of long-lasting tomatoes when they were green. They were much denser and stronger than usual. After removing them from the bush, I washed them, dried them, and put them in wooden boxes, layering each layer with newspapers. Stored at a temperature of 5-10°C, periodically sorted through and removed spoiled specimens. They ripened very slowly. I would like to note that the higher the air temperature in the room in which they are located, the faster the fruits acquire a mature appearance.
Today, breeders have developed a sufficient number of long-lasting varieties of tomatoes.
This happened by studying the influence of the phytohormone ethylene on the timing of their ripening. The amount of ethylene contained in fruits directly determines the rate of ripening of tomatoes. Breeders managed to slow down the synthesis of this phytohormone at the genetic level, which made it possible to develop a number of varieties and hybrids characterized by increased shelf life.
“Gift of Autumn” turned out to be very fruitful. The bushes reached a height of 50-60 cm. I, like the others, tied them up and pinched them, leaving 2-3 stepsons on each plant. The round fruits were quite large - from 150 to 300 g. During the ripening process, they acquired a red-orange color. From each bush I collected about 7 kg of vegetables.
"Giraffe" is an indeterminate variety. I led each bush into one stem, removing all the stepsons. When the plants reached a height of 1-1.2 m, I pinched the growing point. I also liked this late-ripening variety for its resistance to diseases. Its fruits grew a little smaller compared to “Gift of Autumn” - 90-130 g, but the yield was also high. Each plant produced 5-6 clusters with 6-8 tomatoes. When ripe, they turned a bright orange-yellow color and were quite fleshy and sweetish in taste.
“Long Keeper” turned out to be less productive, but its fruits tasted simply delicious in winter. Their shell is orange, and the fleshy and very tasty flesh is bright red. The Long Keeper bushes have grown quite powerful - about 1.5 m. They also require mandatory shaping and tying to a support. The average weight of flat-round fruits was 200-350 g.
In the new summer season, I plan to definitely plant all three varieties that pleased us this winter. In addition, I want to experiment with long-lasting tomatoes, the seeds of which I recently purchased - “Snowfall F1”, “Crunch F1”, “Long-lasting” and “Orange Ball” .
You can buy tomato seeds for gardening and growing indoors on Aliexpress
Compared to tomatoes of summer varieties, the fruits of older tomatoes taste harsh. Their flesh is less juicy and denser, they have a less pronounced tomato aroma. But in any case, they are all much tastier than store-bought ones. I advise all gardeners to plant at least one of the varieties I described above. They will certainly delight you. It’s so nice to eat fresh tomatoes grown at your dacha in winter, when there is snow and frost outside.

Where grown: Open ground
I planted it for two years. I realized that I don’t have to wait for the fruits to turn red. They are orange when ripe. They last a long time and are stored well. I came to the conclusion that they should be planted later than all other tomatoes in order to be harvested green in September. I won't say that they are very tasty. But this is when there is plenty to choose from. And in winter they go with a bang.

Country of origin, year of registration
The hybrid was bred through the efforts of breeders in Russia from the Siberian Federal District. Included in the State Register as a tomato intended for open beds in 2006.
Growing regions
Initially, the hybrid was created for planting in the Western Siberian regions. Can be planted in other areas as well.
Method of use
Has excellent taste. Ideal for fresh salads and slices. Used in preparing side dishes, added to meat and fish. Suitable for:
- whole conservation;
- preparation of juices and pastes;
- production of ketchups and sauces.
From 1 m2 they collect 8-12 kg. From 1 bush the productivity is 3-5 kg.
On the beds there are no more than 4-6 bushes per 1 m2. Fertilizers are first applied to the soil, the following components are added per 1 m2:
- compost 7 kg,
- superphosphate 20 g,
- potassium sulfate 5 g,
- wood ash 1 cup.
Pay attention to predecessors. The most successful varieties for tomatoes are carrots, greens, zucchini, and salads.
Features of cultivation:
- Water moderately 2-3 times a week, water consumption per bush is 7-8 liters.
- They are fed with organic matter, saltpeter, and phosphorus-potassium composition.
- Mulch with a layer of leaves, straw, hay.
Ripe tomatoes can be stored for no more than 2-3 weeks. For open ground, tomatoes are grown in seedlings. Seeds are sown from late February to mid-March.
Initially, the seed material is disinfected, for this purpose 1% potassium permanganate, “Fitosporin” is used. To ensure high quality germination, cover the boxes with polyethylene and keep them at a temperature of 25 degrees.
Features of caring for seedlings:
- Additional lighting for 12-14 hours.
- Fertilizing with organic matter in the form of solutions.
- Watering with complex compounds “Kemira” or “Krepysh”.
- Diving when there are 2-3 true leaves.
- Hardening for a week before transplanting to a permanent place.
The optimal age of seedlings for planting in greenhouses or open areas is 55-60 days.

Recommended conditions
To ensure lying down, it is necessary to create suitable conditions, because their duration will depend on them. Important for storage:
- Compliance with recommended temperature and humidity levels. The maximum upper temperature threshold should not exceed +22 degrees, and the lower - +10 degrees. Room humidity is 70-80%.
- Lack of light in the room, as it stimulates overripening of vegetables, which leads to their drying out and rotting. If brown specimens are still planted, then the presence of sunlight or artificial lighting is allowed for them, but only for the ripening period.
- Choose the most convenient container, which can be ordinary wooden boxes, wicker baskets and boxes. If you plan to store them in cardboard boxes, then you must first make vent holes in them for full circulation of fresh air.
- Use additional materials to maintain the required microclimate in the container. For this purpose, they are sprinkled with sawdust, peat, straw, or wrapped in thin paper. If one specimen rots, the others will remain uninfected.
Once or twice a week, it is recommended to check the harvested crop for spoiled fruits, and also change the tomatoes. Quite often, infection with late blight and bacterial cancer is detected, as indicated by the appearance of brown spots. Sick tomatoes must be removed from the box as quickly as possible.
The optimal place for storing tomatoes is the basement, but if it is not available, storage can be arranged on an insulated balcony, pantry, or even under the bed, but only if there are no heating radiators nearby. If desired, ripe vegetables can be placed in the refrigerator, but in this case their shelf life will be much shorter.
