Description and characteristics of the Vorlon tomato variety, reviews, photos

Mid-season, indeterminate, rare tomato variety with the original name Vorlon, USA.

The bush is spreading with potato-type leaves, up to 1.3 meters high. Requires tying to the support and pinning. The best result was obtained when forming a plant with 2 stems.

Basic qualities of fruits

The fruits are flat-round, dark purple in color at maturity, weighing up to 600 grams, excellent taste. These tomatoes are good for fresh consumption and making juices and sauces.

The yield of the variety is slightly above average.

Characteristics and description of the Vorlon variety

The tomato was brought to our country from the USA, and immediately attracted the attention of gardeners with its unusual nature. Despite its exotic origin, tomato is very easy to grow. It does not require special fertilizers, quickly acclimatizes, and tolerates spring coolness well. The bush is indeterminate, which means that the Vorlon tomato does not stop growing. It reaches a height of 2 meters; in greenhouse conditions it may slightly outgrow this figure.

Main qualities of the plant:

  • tall;
  • mid-season;
  • spreading bush;
  • large-fruited.

The fruits of this exotic vegetable have an interesting dark, slightly grayish color, due to the presence of special pigments. Its taste is much brighter than that of light varieties. In the section it has many chambers filled with a small amount of seeds. The skin is thin, not dense, tomatoes make excellent sauces, pastes, and soup dressings. Great for making salads. Such tomatoes are rarely pickled; due to their large size, they are not suitable for preservation in their entirety. This did not prevent the variety from becoming one of the most interesting and recognizable tomatoes in the home garden. With proper care, the bushes give a good harvest.

Features of cultivation, planting and care

Sowing the seeds of this variety of tomatoes for seedlings is carried out 60-65 days before the intended planting in the ground. Seedlings dive at the stage of two true leaves. When planting seedlings in a permanent place per 1 sq. It is recommended to place up to 3 plants per meter of land; when forming into 1 stem - up to 4.

Further care for tomatoes consists of timely watering, fertilizing with complex mineral fertilizer, pinching and preventive measures to protect against diseases and pests.

If you grew Vorlon tomatoes, please write whether you liked them or not. What was the yield and taste of the fruits like under your climatic conditions? How do you rate the disease resistance of this variety? Briefly describe the advantages and disadvantages of this tomato in your opinion. If possible, attach a photo of your tomatoes to your comment. Thank you!

Your reviews of the Vorlon tomato and additions to the description will help many gardeners evaluate this variety more objectively and decide whether it is worth planting or not.

When you get tired of everything ordinary and everyday, you want to try something new, rare, exotic. This also happens with gardeners who, for the sake of interest and experimentation, purchase foreign elite, very rare varieties of tomato.

Tomatoes in this category are unusual, often differing in some way: color or shape, or maybe taste or color. However, there are varieties that are original in all characteristics. One of them is the American variety “Vorlon” (original name Vorlon).

Growing rules

Considering the descriptions and characteristics of Vorlon, we can safely say that for the culture it is enough to adhere to the basic rules of growing tomatoes. Seed material is purchased from trusted suppliers.

Important! There is no point in growing a crop from your own, collected and stored material; the main varietal characteristics of the “parent” are not transmitted to subsequent generations.

Purchased seeds must be disinfected and pre-germinated. Sowing work is carried out approximately two months before planting in the ground. It is advisable to plan this work for the month of March, having previously created the ideal soil from components such as peat, fertile soil and humus. The soil should be moist and evenly distributed among the containers, well loosened.

It is better to sprinkle the seed material with river sand, which allows moisture to better flow to the roots of young plants, which promotes their growth. For covering use plastic or glass, film. It is important for farmers to monitor the air temperature, which should not fall below 21 degrees, but should not rise above 28 degrees. Germination will take only 8 days. The cover is removed as soon as the sprouts are about a centimeter long.

Picking is carried out when permanent leaves are noticeable. By this time, the bushes will need their own space in a separate pot for normal development. Seedlings of the Vorlon tomato plant are characterized by a well-developed root system with small internodes. As the seedlings grow, you can gradually reduce the temperature. It is imperative that the sprouts are grown under light, which will ensure effective vertical growth of tomatoes.

As soon as the plant forms 9 leaves, you need to hurry and replant the tomatoes. The main rule is a 50 to 70 scheme, which ensures better growth of bushes, strengthening of stems, and active formation of brushes. A square meter of plot should accommodate two to three plants. The deep planting method for the Vorlon variety, taking into account the reviews, is not suitable. It is important that the root system is close to the soil surface. But this feature must be taken into account in the future during loosening.

Local garter requires effort and time from the gardener, but always gives the best result in terms of fruiting of tomato bushes. If a crop of this variety is grown in well-cultivated soil, then the first fertilizing is applied two weeks after transplantation. It is better to use manure or other high-quality organic material.

Next, it is worth using mineral complex fertilizers based on copper and potassium, which will promote the active development of fruits. Watering is carried out several times a week without oversaturating the soil. A prerequisite for the healthy growth of Vorlon tomatoes, taking into account the recommendations of experienced gardeners, is loosening.

Characteristic

The Vorlon tomato belongs to the group of medium-ripening varieties. The first fruits appear 90 days from the date of germination. By the time they finally ripen, another 20-25 days pass.

Vorlon is an interderminant variety, that is, the bush tends to not stop growing. The average height of a bush in open ground can reach one and a half meters, while in greenhouse conditions the plant can grow up to two meters. The plant must be tied up, pinched and formed correctly, preferably into two stems, then Vorlon will show the best yield. Vorlon is a rare variety that you can’t buy in every store in Russia. It is not grown on an industrial scale, but experienced gardeners are happy to grow Vorlon in their plots.

The leaves are medium-sized, rough, dark green in color, similar to potato leaves. The bush is very branched and spreading.

The flat-round fruits have an interesting color - a rich dark burgundy color, turning into almost black at the stalk. Each cluster produces up to 5-6 fruits, the weight of each of them sometimes reaching up to 600 grams. The parameters of this variety are discouraging: sometimes you have to use additional supports for each brush, since the branch cannot hold several kilograms at once.

The peel of the fruit is thick, smooth, shiny. The pulp is dense, juicy, with a high sugar content. The taste is considered standard by all world standards. The tomato has a pleasant aroma. Vorlon tomatoes are widely used for cooking in the best restaurants in America, as well as around the world.

  • huge fruit size;
  • excellent taste;
  • refers to rare, elite varieties of tomato;
  • good appearance;
  • unique color;
  • the bush grows upward, saving garden space;
  • protected from all tomato diseases;
  • has a long fruiting period from mid-summer until frost.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Vorlon tomato is an indeterminate plant. Its bushes reach a height of one and a half to two meters. In open ground they grow lower than in a greenhouse. The plant is lush and branched. The leaves are dark green, rough and potato-like.

The tomatoes are collected in clusters of 5-6 pieces, large, weighing 250-350 grams. Some specimens reach 600 grams. The skin has an unusual purple-burgundy color, the intensity of which varies from burgundy to dark purple; it is darker at the stalk than at the top. The shape of the fruit is flat-round, the skin is smooth and shiny.

Tomatoes are juicy, contain a lot of sugar, are fleshy, taste sweet, and have a pronounced pleasant aroma. Suitable for processing into juices and cooking, as well as for fresh consumption.

Features of cultivation

Vorlon is grown in the same way as all other tomato varieties. The only difference is that it is better to buy seeds. Subsequent collection of seeds from ripe tomatoes is a waste of time, since they will differ in quality and will not give the expected results.

Sowing seeds

The seeds do not need to be processed or disinfected, since the manufacturer prepares the seeds for sowing in advance.

In order for the seedlings to grow well by the time of planting, they need at least two months. Therefore, sowing is carried out in early March. The soil mixture for seedlings should consist of peat, humus and soil. Before sowing, the soil needs to be slightly moistened and mineral fertilizers applied.

For seedlings use boxes or cassettes. The grains are laid out in rows. This will provide uniform lighting to the shoots. Sprinkle a little sand on top of the seeds. This will allow moisture to penetrate better into the soil and provide nutrition to the roots. In order for seedlings to grow better, it is recommended to cover the boxes with film or glass. The optimal room temperature should be 22-25 degrees Celsius. In a warm and humid environment, the seeds will hatch within 8-10 days. As soon as the sprouts grow one centimeter, the film must be removed.

With the appearance of two leaves on the seedlings, it’s time to pick. Each bush is planted in separate cups. From this moment, the intensive growth of tall Vorlon tomatoes begins.

Since the variety is distinguished by its tall growth, the seedlings grow stocky, with short internodes. In order for plants to form correctly, they need to be provided with a constant temperature of 23 degrees. When the bushes rise by 15-20 centimeters, the temperature should be reduced slightly. By maintaining round-the-clock heat, up to three clusters will form on the bushes by the time they are planted in the garden.

Vorlon is a heat-loving tomato, so often when transplanted into open ground, plants become weak and slow down. This occurs due to sudden temperature changes and environmental changes. To prevent this, seedlings must be hardened off before planting. For these purposes, tomatoes are placed in a cool environment. The optimal temperature during the day should be +18 degrees, and at night +17 degrees. If you make it a little cooler, the first cluster may form very low, which will significantly affect the future harvest.

In addition to temperature, it is also necessary to ensure that there is enough sunlight. If there is insufficient lighting, the plant's flowers will be set low.

Features of growing tomato

Experienced gardeners recommend growing this tomato in a greenhouse using a drip irrigation system. This will help provide it with all the conditions necessary for productivity:

  • warm;
  • illumination;
  • humidity;
  • nutritious soil.

The seeds do not need to be soaked before planting. Can be sown dry. On the ground, they are sprinkled with a small layer of earth; if planted too deeply, the tender shoots will not be able to break through to the surface. Instead of soil, you can use river sand to fill the seeds; it will help the tomatoes germinate faster and receive more moisture during growth. In the central region of Russia, seedlings can be planted in the soil of a greenhouse in May, having previously fertilized it with peat or humus. A large amount of nutrients will stimulate rapid growth and maturation of the plant, but may prevent crop set. Bushes can fatten. Ideal greenhouse conditions, sufficient watering and optimal temperature will help to fully realize the potential of this unique variety. On average, sprouts appear above the surface on the 5th day after planting. The optimal temperature for young shoots is 21-28°C.

The tomato is a mid-season vegetable, so within 4 weeks after planting the seedlings you can get excellent, ripe and juicy tomatoes and fully enjoy their taste. Caring for a tomato requires strength. Indeterminate varieties need to be staked and shaped so that they take up less space and receive enough light. Despite the difficulties in care, many gardeners want to get their hands on an exotic tomato, because it will become an excellent table decoration.

Landing in the ground

By the time the seedlings are planted in a permanent place, 9-10 leaves will appear on the bushes, a flower brush should form above the top one. The brush is tilted down. Tomato internodes are narrow and short. The stem is thick and powerful.

A separate hole is dug for each bush. There are 2-3 plants per square meter. Planting tomatoes too densely can impair plant growth. The bushes will take all the energy from each other. In addition, their strong foliage will shade neighboring bushes. Leave 60-70 centimeters between rows. And in order to make it easier to tie the plants later, the seedlings are planted in a checkerboard pattern.

Care

Plant Formation

Like all tall tomatoes, Vorlon bushes must be shaped. This is easy to do: just remove all side shoots. Vorlon bears fruit better if you arrange the bushes into 1 or 2 stems, no more.

It is easier to form a bush into one stem; to do this, you do not pinch the top, but remove the lateral shoots, that is, pinching. This method is good for growing tomatoes in a greenhouse. If the plant grows in one stem, then the seedlings can be planted more densely, and more crops can be harvested from one square.

Most gardeners form tomatoes into two stems. To do this, one stepson is left on the main stem under the first flower. This is what will grow in parallel with the main shoot.

Garter

The need for regular tying and installation of reliable supports is perhaps the main troublesome task in growing the Vorlon variety.

You can tie up bushes locally. However, this method is more labor-intensive. Gardeners usually construct a trellis from two posts, which are placed on opposite sides of the bed, and then stretch a strong thread along the bed. Every 30-40 centimeters from the surface as the plants grow, a new layer of thread is pulled.

Top dressing

During the growing of tomatoes, experts recommend three main feedings with fertilizers. The first of them is introduced 1-14 days after planting the seedlings in the garden bed. As a feed, pure organic material is added - rotted manure or bird droppings.

When the second cluster blooms and it is about to bloom, it is necessary to apply fertilizer a second time. Potassium permanganate, Mortar or Kemira-universal solution and copper sulfate are added to the organic matter.

The tomatoes are fed the third time during fruit formation. For better filling of vegetables, complex mineral fertilizers are added, which include potassium and copper.

If, when the brushes are formed, few inflorescences are formed on them, this means that the plant is oversaturated with nitrogen. In order to neutralize the effects of nitrogen, superphosphate or ash infusion is added to the soil.

Mulching and loosening

When growing tomatoes in a greenhouse, many gardeners may encounter the problem of waterlogging in the greenhouse atmosphere. Plants also find it uncomfortable to grow in humid and hot climates. In addition, plants are instantly affected by various ailments, which can sometimes be difficult to eliminate. To avoid such situations, the greenhouse room must be well ventilated. Ventilation for plants is simply necessary. The flow of new air to the bushes should be constant.

You can often observe a picture when moisture stagnates on the ground. This means that for some reason the earth is very compacted and does not allow water to reach the roots. In addition to water, air also cannot get under its surface. A well-known agrotechnical technique, loosening, helps to prevent such moments. You need to loosen the soil regularly. If the soil is very dense, you can pierce the ground around the bushes with a pitchfork. Turning the soil will allow moisture and gas exchange to normalize.

When growing tomatoes in open ground, gardeners are faced with another difficult problem - drought. Often, due to the heat, the soil becomes covered with a dry crust, which also stops the penetration of water and oxygen. Loosening also helps to cope with this problem, however, along with this method, there is another, no less popular method to avoid stagnant water. This method is mulching. The mulch can be sawdust or leaves, which are laid out in a layer of 7-10 centimeters around the bush. This cover will serve as excellent protection from the scorching rays of the sun. Mulch retains water in the soil for a long time and prevents the soil from cracking and clumping. Under such a layer, the soil is always moist and warm - everything the plant needs for successful growth.

Reviews

It’s a normal variety, but I didn’t get the same quality as the manufacturer claims. I grew it in a greenhouse, the bushes grew no more than 130 centimeters. It bushes heavily, so I had to constantly pinch it back. The taste is normal, there is a little sourness. There are very few seeds inside the tomato. Productivity is slightly above average, not amazing.

Vorlon is a new variety, overseas, and in our area they don’t even know about it. I grew it once. The bushes are tall and the fruits are unusually large. The color of the tomato is very beautiful, and this variety is probably remembered for this quality. My tomatoes turned out to be purple-brown in color with a little green on the shoulders. The taste is also good, suitable for fresh consumption, juices, and sauces.

Description of Vorlon tomatoes

Tomato variety. Vorlon was bred in the USA (American name - Vorlon). Refers to mid-season indeterminate varieties. The bush does not grow very tall, about 1.3 - 1.5 meters, but is very spreading.

Potato type leaves. This variety is a rare variety, the seeds of which are not so easy to buy in any store. The exclusivity of the variety lies in the parameters of its fruits, which reach a weight of 600-700 g, as well as in its excellent taste. It is not used industrially, but is readily grown for fresh consumption.

Tomato plants of the Vorlon variety need staking, pinching and the formation of a bush. The plant exhibits the best productivity if the bush is formed into two trunks. The support can be either trellis or conventional type.

Vorlon fruits are flat-round in shape and, when ripe, acquire an amazingly rich purple-pink color. The taste is considered excellent by all world standards. These are the indispensable advantages of the variety, for which they prefer to grow it.

The downside is the average yield. That is, one cannot count on abundant harvests of this variety.

Vorlon tomatoes are grown in seedlings. You need to sow the seeds 60 days before planting the finished seedlings in greenhouse soil. There are two plants per square meter. And, since the yield is not much above average, a large area will be needed to produce a large number of fruits.
