Luxurious rose Black Queen with the rarest colors and crimson tint

Since ancient times, the rose has been considered the queen of all flowers created by the sorceress nature. A huge number of amazingly beautiful legends, songs and poems are dedicated to her.

This luxurious flower received its Russian name from the Latin word rosa, which has almost the same sound in many languages of the world. In turn, its Latin name comes from the Greek word rhedon, translated as red, which corresponds to most varieties with such flower colors. Among the huge variety of this type of plant there is a unique flower - the climbing rose, called the Black Queen, which will be discussed in this article.

Interesting facts about rose

1. In the old days, the king of India fulfilled any wishes of visitors who brought him roses.

2. Brahmin temples were always decorated with these fabulously beautiful flowers, and kings always had them in their chambers.

3. The road to the gods during various religious ceremonies was always strewn with bright fragrant rose petals.

4. Wedding ceremonies were always accompanied by showering the brides with delicate petals, as a sign of a future happy and prosperous life.

The popularity of these flowers has not only not gone away since those ancient times, on the contrary, it is growing. Scientists-breeders have developed a huge variety of new unique varieties not only with a unique aroma, but also with a variety of unexpected colors for flowers.

Among such necessary and important people in life, magnificent flowers of various colors and shapes, there is an unusually beautiful rose - the Black Queen (there is a photo of it in the article). But first, let's present some general information about climbing roses.

Features of the variety

“Black Queen” can be planted both in spring and autumn; the necessary condition is a soil temperature of at least +13 degrees Celsius.
Important! Rooters with a sticky texture guarantee 100% survival rate of roses.
The landing site should be sunny; in the shade, the color of the “Black Queen” fades and loses its decorative appeal. If the leaves begin to turn very yellow from exposure to sunlight, you can spray them with iron chelate in the proportions specified in the instructions.

The rose needs frequent, abundant watering, especially during the growing season and the appearance of the first buds. During this period, regardless of whether it rains or not, the plant needs to be watered once every 7 days; one bush will require up to 10 liters of water. It is not recommended to water with a hose with a sprayer; the total air humidity, both artificially created and natural from rain, creates a danger of fungus developing on the leaves. Therefore, you should use a watering can, and in the spring, spray the bushes with products against these microorganisms. 3-4 days after watering, it is necessary to weed out weeds around the bush and loosen the soil a little so that oxygen flows more actively to the root system.

“Black Queen” is one of the most demanding rose varieties regarding the saturation of the soil with beneficial microelements. In summer, fertilizing is applied after 1 watering: once just water is used, the second time a solution of mineral fertilizers is used. In spring you can alternate them with organic ones. For example, use a weak solution of wood ash and mullein; it is added to the water prepared for irrigation, no more than 0.5 liters per 5-liter bucket.

The Black Queen rose will not be able to withstand cold and windy winters without help and external protection. You need to start preparing for cold weather with changes in fertilizing, back in mid-August: eliminate nitrogen fertilizers, add only potassium fertilizers. Anticipating the first frosts, which, depending on the region, can begin either in September or in November, the rose needs to be laid. This should be done before low temperatures so that the branches do not become brittle and break. Laying involves pressing the bush to the ground, securing it with metal hooks, or using ropes and pegs. The root needs to be covered with sand, then covered with spruce/pine branches. The entire rose is covered on top with durable non-woven material. It remains in this position until the beginning of April.

Important!

If, despite precautions, some of the branches were frostbitten during the winter, they can be safely removed. "Black Queen" is recovering well, this will not affect flowering in any way.

general information

Climbing roses have no official classification and are not classified into a special plant family or genus. They represent only the species and varieties of wild roses, rose hips and garden roses. Their distinctive feature is their long shoots.

Climbing roses are divided into climbers, small-flowered and large-flowered. The following bushes are distinguished by growth: semi-climbing with shoots up to 3 meters long, climbing (from 3 to 5 meters), climbing from 5 to 15 meters long.

Compared to ordinary roses, they are a little more difficult to care for. It should be remembered that in order to properly grow such roses, it is also necessary to prune them in a timely and correct manner. Mistakes can mean that the climbing rose will not bloom.

These roses are quite good in vertical landscape gardening; they perfectly decorate gazebos, balconies, pergolas, arches and columns.

Many varieties continuously produce new shoots and buds, so their flowering can continue continuously (1-3 months). These include the Black Queen presented below. And flowers that bloom almost all summer are the most desired and beloved in any garden and park.

Serious mistakes gardeners make when planting and caring for this variety of climbing rose

  1. Plant the variety in regions with a humid climate where prolonged rains are possible.

“Black Queen” is not one of those roses that tolerate waterlogging well. One of the ways to combat moisture stagnation is to plant bushes freely; there should be a distance of at least 0.5 m between them. This also applies to other plants located nearby. For climbing roses, good aeration and free air movement in the crown and in the soil are important.

  1. Excessively acidify the soil.

In the description of the variety there is often a recommendation to acidify the soil to increase the color intensity of the flowering. You should not get carried away with a large number of substances that change the pH level downwards. Still, roses prefer a neutral reaction. If the soil is excessively acidic, then instead of a change in flowering, you can get it completely absent.

Climbing rose Black Queen: description

The plant in question is a compact, small-sized, upright bush, the height of which reaches 3 meters. Long, fairly flexible lashes cling perfectly to any support. Unusually dark flowers, almost black, with a burgundy core, look quite luxurious and rich. The buds on the branches appear in clusters and bloom into large spherical flowers. The first flowers appear in June, and the bush blooms continuously and abundantly until frost.

In Russia, this variety has three names:

• Black queen;

• Dark Queen;

• Black Queen.

The Black Queen rose has an extraordinary, unique coloring of its petals, which no other variety of climbing rose has. It is either black anthracite with tints of scarlet and crimson, or rich burgundy.

It should be noted that such a plant, indeed, like a real queen, is relatively capricious and requires a lot of attention.

Advantages

Important! Wild rose hips are used as a scion. In subsequent years, the plant practically does not form wild shoots.

Flowering is abundant and long lasting. Since June, more and more black buds are always blooming in the garden. And so on all summer until the first frost arrives. The beauty of the iridescence is enhanced, the petals become bright and juicy if the plant is planted in a sunny place with a lot of light.

Attention! The Black Queen begins to bloom only in the second year, after planting on last year's shoots.

Since the Black Queen is a climbing variety, the care rules are no different.

Exotic flowers amaze with their unusual black, iridescent color, huge double flowers with a burgundy core. If you touch the flower, you feel cool velvet under your fingers. Just look at this branch in the photo below. It's hard to pass by. The finest aroma from a blooming black queen spreads over a long distance, enveloping everything around.

Peculiarities

1. This variety of rose is grafted onto a wild rose hip that practically does not produce root shoots, and therefore in subsequent years the plant practically does not form them.

2. Flowering of the Black Queen begins only in the second year after planting, and always on last year’s shoots.

3. Even black roses, as noted above, have petals that have valuable properties that help cure various diseases.

Features of cultivation

Rose bushes can be planted in spring and autumn. The most favorable period for planting is spring. A necessary condition is that the soil must be heated to +13° and above. Most often, this is the end of April - beginning of March.

Autumn planting begins in mid-September and ends in the second half of October. The only drawback of spring planting compared to autumn planting is that the seedlings lag behind in growth by about 14 days.

It is advisable to choose places for planting the Black Queen variety in the sun. It is not recommended to plant seedlings in lowlands and near groundwater.

The soil is dug up and all weeds are removed. They dig holes and add manure to the bottom. Then another layer of soil is poured. Place the seedling in the hole, cover it with soil and lightly compact it. At the end of planting, water the bush generously.

Magnificent garden decoration

The Black Queen (see photo below for garden design) is valued by many landscape designers for its excellent opportunity to create amazing flower arrangements with their help.

This luxurious bush is given a special place on the site. A large number of large spherical velvety buds of iridescent black color look great in compositions with other types of roses and other flowers. It is very important that these flowers do not fall off for a long time and do not lose their original freshness.

The Black Queen is also good when cut: the flowers last a long time in a vase, fragrant with a delicate, subtle aroma.

Description of the variety

The rose grows in bushes up to 3 m in height; they are densely dotted with double flowers, which are almost black in color when half-closed. When the bud opens, it becomes clear that its color ranges from scarlet at the folds of the petals to a rich velvety dark burgundy at the edges. The stems are bright green, thin and flexible, perfectly attached to the base, growth has a vertical tendency.

The “Black Queen” has few thorns, but there can be up to 5 buds on one branch, and the size of each can reach 10 cm. The number of petals of one rose is about 45 pieces, they are angular, pointed at the edge, which makes its appearance whimsically elegant.

The aroma of flowers is weak, barely perceptible.

Tips for caring for roses

To maintain fresh juiciness and brightness of flowers, the bush should be planted in well-lit, sunny places, and you need to care for them throughout the season.

Only in regions with frost (below -35 degrees), with piercing cold winds, with little or no snow, should the bush be covered at the end of autumn by removing the lashes from the support and bending them to the ground, after placing boards under them to avoid rot and debate. The bushes are covered with pine spruce branches on top, which provides them not only with protection from frost, but also with the necessary air exchange. In the spring, after being freed from shelter, the bushes should be trimmed, stretched, raised and supported. First of all, the branches of the bush should be treated with Bordeaux mixture.

Caring for the Black Queen is practically no different from caring for other varieties of climbing roses. It is especially important to pay attention to them in the first year of their life.

Feeding a young bush should be done approximately once every two weeks (1 liter of manure and 1 glass of wood ash are mixed in a bucket of water). The same solution should also be used to fertilize the leaves (foliar), but already in June. By the second year, the flowers become more hardy and unpretentious, but still, care for them should be continued. Pruning, fertilizing, watering, mulching - all this must be done correctly and in moderation.

Experience of gardeners from various regions in growing “Black Queen”

I planted the “Black Queen” on the south-eastern side of my rose garden. In the afternoon, the bush is in partial shade from a lattice wooden fence. The bush rests on the same fence; I didn’t make any special support.

The soil was prepared the same as for hybrid tea roses. In the first year the rose did not bloom; buds appeared in the second year, but the flowering was not as abundant as expected.

For the winter, I removed the lashes and covered them with spansuf - 60. In the spring, all the shoots were well preserved. I cut off some of the dried ends. In general, care is no more difficult than for hybrid tea roses, but they do not need to be pruned for the winter.

  1. Marina Petrovna – 56 years old, (Podolsk, Moscow region, zone 4)

Our dacha is located next to a spruce forest. We often collect peat and spruce needles there. We use it to mulch roses. In the description of the “Black Queen” variety, I read that the color darkens if the soil is acidic. But this did not affect our rose; it remained the same before feeding with peat.

  1. Petr Ivanovich – 63 years old, (Minsk, Belarus, zone 5).

“The Black Queen” has been at our dacha for several years now. We pay the same attention to it as to other varietal roses. We don’t cover it for the winter, we just hill it up. A couple of years ago, when frosts reached minus 15 0, the branches froze, some at the ends, and others to the level of snow. Everything grew well in the spring and bloomed all summer.

Category: “Questions and answers”

Question No. 1. What is the best place to plant the “Black Queen” next to?

The variety is often planted alone to emphasize its originality. If you choose neighbors, then the most successful option is coniferous plants. In summer they serve as a backdrop for blooming roses, and in winter they serve a decorative function. Shrub junipers of the following shapes are more suitable than others:

  • M. Chinese – f. "Robusta Green"
  • M. virginsky – f. "Blue Prince"
  • M. average – f. "Gold Star", "Old Gold", "Ficiriana",
  • M. vulgaris - “Green capet”, “Blue capet” and other similar varieties.

If this variety is planted in a rose garden, then it is better if it is surrounded by roses with light flowering colors - white, yellow, light pink. Against their background, the dark purple color of the “Black Queen” will become more expressive.

Question No. 2. Where is it better to plant this variety of rose?

It is better to choose a place where there is openwork partial shade in the afternoon. In the open, scorching sun, the climbing rose suffers from the heat. Excessive lighting negatively affects the color of flowering. Often the edges of the petals dry out and lose their decorative effect.

Preparing bushes for winter

The climbing rose Black Queen or Black Queen is frost-resistant and can withstand frosts down to -30°, provided that the winter was snowy. If there was little precipitation in winter and there were strong winds, the risk of damage to the bushes is high. To prevent this, it is necessary to prepare rose bushes for winter in advance.

Preparing climbing roses for winter has some features that should not be forgotten. Unlike bush roses, where it is enough to cover 10–15 cm of the stem, climbing roses cover the entire length of the branches.

Preparation of Black Queen variety plants for winter begins in August. From this moment on, they stop watering the rose garden and loosening the soil near them. Plants are no longer fed nitrogen and potassium fertilizers are added to the soil. This will strengthen the shoots for winter.

The stems need to be laid at above-zero temperatures. In frost, branches become brittle and may break. All stems are tied together and gently pressed to the ground. You can fix it in this form using iron hooks. The base of the flower is covered with sand and covered with spruce branches. The branches are covered with non-woven material.
