Characteristics of tomato Hurricane F1

This is an early ripening, tall variety, with small but uniform fruits. Plants require staking to supports and pinching.

Hurricane tomato yield and what affects it

From 1 sq. m of area occupied by Hurricane hybrid tomatoes, you can collect 1-2.2 kg of fruit. This is higher than that of the “Gruntovy Gribovsky” and “White Naliv” varieties, which are accepted as the standard. In greenhouse, more stable conditions, the yield will be higher than in garden beds.

The number of fruits that can be collected from the bushes also depends on how the grower will care for the tomatoes. It will not be possible to harvest a large harvest from unkempt or diseased bushes.

Resistance to diseases and pests

Moderately resistant to late blight on tops, but severely affected by this disease on fruits. The hybrid is immune to most common diseases.

Area of application of fruits

The fruits of Hurricane tomatoes are used for fresh eating and for canning in whole form, to obtain juice and paste from them. The fruits contain 4.5-5.3% dry matter, 2.1-3.8% sugars, 11.9 mg of vitamin C per 100 g of product, 0.5% organic acids.

On hybrid plants, tomatoes ripen quickly and smoothly

Description and main characteristics

Sometimes these tomatoes are confused with another hybrid variety - Tornado. However, these are two completely different varieties, differing not only in terms of ripening, but also in the shape of the bushes and ripening fruits. This hybrid is the fruit of the work of Russian breeders.

The description of the variety should begin with the main characteristics of the bush. The Hurricane tomato variety is of the indeterminate type, so the tops of the shoots will need to be pinched. These early-ripening tomatoes ripen in about three months from the moment the first shoots appear. The shoots can reach 1.9 - 2.1 m in height. Side shoots develop little. To obtain high yields, these tomatoes form no more than two shoots.

The amount of foliage on the shoots is slightly below average, the leaves are light emerald, their shape is characteristic of all tomatoes. Typically, the lower foliage is removed as the stems grow. Since the shoots grow quite tall and the ripening fruits are quite heavy, the stems should be tied up so that they do not break off. Usually, either trellises or any other supports are used for this. For proper harvest formation, excess shoots on the bushes should be regularly removed.

The variety is an early one, so the stems and foliage are usually not affected by late blight, but ripening tomatoes can become infected. The main characteristic of Hurricane is high yield and almost simultaneous ripening of tomatoes.

The description will be incomplete without talking about the fruits themselves. The shape of ripening tomatoes is round, slightly flattened, slightly ribbed. The color of ripe tomatoes is bright red. The skin is quite dense, the tomatoes practically do not crack. The weight of tomatoes is about 40 g; in a greenhouse you can get fruits weighing up to 100 g.

The yield of the variety is usually up to 10 kg from 1 m2 in open beds, and up to 11.5 kg in a greenhouse.

The pulp is quite dense, tender, and the taste is high. The presentation of ripe tomatoes is good; tomatoes tolerate transportation well over short distances. The tomato variety is recommended for use fresh, canned, in salads, and for tomato juice.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Hurricane tomato hybrid can be grown both in open beds and in a greenhouse, but besides this, it has the following advantages:

  • one-dimensionality of fruits;
  • early and friendly maturation;
  • dense, non-cracking skin;
  • good appearance of the fruit;
  • excellent taste;
  • tops resistance to late blight;
  • productivity.

There are also disadvantages:

  1. Due to the tallness, the plants need to be tied up.
  2. We need to cut off the stepsons.
  3. High risk of fruit disease from late blight.

“Hurricane” seeds cannot be left for propagation, as they are hybrid.

Features of planting and care

Tomatoes are grown mainly from seedlings; seeds should be sown in the spring at different times. They depend on the climatic conditions of the regions. You should choose a time so that approximately 1.5 months remain before the date of intended planting of Hurricane tomatoes in the beds. That's how long it takes to grow seedlings.

Hurricane tomato seeds are sown in separate cups or pots, plastic or peat. You can also sow in a common container, but then they will have to be plucked when they throw out 3-4 leaves. The volume of the cups should be approximately 0.3 liters, this will be enough for the seedlings to grow normally.

A universal substrate designed for growing vegetable seedlings is well suited for filling them. Fill the cups almost to the top with the soil mixture, make a small depression in the middle of each and drop 1 seed there. First, Hurricane tomato seeds are soaked in water for 1 day, and then in a fungicide solution for dressing for approximately 0.5 hours.

The seeds are watered and sprinkled with substrate. After planting, the cups are transferred to a warm place and covered with film. They should remain in the pots until sprouts emerge from the ground. After this, the seedlings are transferred to a well-lit place. The most suitable place for tomatoes at this time will be the windowsill.

Tying is a mandatory procedure for tall tomatoes

To water Hurricane tomato seedlings, use warm and always soft water, separated from chlorine. At first, it is convenient to water the soil from a spray bottle, simply moistening it, then from a small flower watering can.

You can feed Hurricane tomatoes with complex fertilizers with microelements. Application frequency: every 2 weeks, starting from the stage when 1-2 true leaves appear on the plants.

Attention! If the tomatoes grow in regular beds, they need to be hardened off 1-1.5 weeks before transplanting.

Hurricane tomato seedlings are transferred to the ground only after frost has passed. In the regions of the Middle Zone, this can be done during the second half of May. Can be planted in the greenhouse at least 2 weeks earlier. Hurricane tomatoes are placed in grooves or holes according to a pattern of 0.4 m in a row and 0.6 m between them. Since the plants grow tall, they require supports. They are installed on tomato beds immediately after planting.

The agricultural technology of Hurricane tomatoes is no different from most varieties of this crop. They require watering, loosening and feeding. You need to water so that the soil always remains moist. It cannot be over-watered or over-dried. After watering, loosening should be carried out. The same procedure will destroy weed sprouts.

Advice! You can maintain soil moisture longer by laying mulch on the surface of the ground.

Fertilizing of Hurricane hybrid tomatoes is carried out 3 or 4 times per season: 2 weeks after transplantation and the beginning of flowering and fruit set, and during the period of their massive growth. Both organic and mineral fertilizers can be used as fertilizers. It is useful to alternate them, but they cannot be used simultaneously.

Hurricane tomatoes grow well at the top, but produce few side branches. They are formed into 2 shoots: the first is the main branch, the second is the primary stepson. The rest are torn off, like the lower old leaves on tomato bushes. The stems are tied to supports so that they do not break.

In a greenhouse you can grow up to 12 kg of tomato fruits per square meter

The tomato harvest from the Hurricane hybrid bushes should be harvested from June to mid-August. They can be picked either fully ripe or slightly unripe. From red and soft fruits you can prepare tomato juice, which turns out to be very thick; dense, slightly unripe ones can be preserved in jars. Tomatoes can be stored in a cool, dark place for some time. They should be placed in small boxes in no more than 2-3 layers to reduce the likelihood of rotting or mold.

Attention! You cannot leave seeds collected from fruits grown by yourself, as this is a hybrid.

Reviews

Last year we bought a summer cottage with a small house, it is not far from the city, so we decided to live there during the warm season. Of course, I wanted to grow something with my own hands; my neighbor in the area was very sociable and gave me several different tomato seeds to try. One of them is “Hurricane”, I used to live in the house and am familiar with caring for and growing various vegetables. Mom refreshed my memory by telling me in detail how and what to do. I sown the seeds in March, planted them in the beds in mid-June, and the seedlings did not get sick. In July, the first ripe tomatoes appeared. The taste is excellent, the harvest is also not bad, about 2.5-3 kg per bush.

Pest and disease control methods

Hurricane tomatoes very often become infected with late blight, so preventive spraying is necessary. First, you can use folk remedies, for example, garlic infusion. It is prepared as follows: 1.5 cups of crushed cloves are poured into 10 liters of water, then left to infuse for 1 day. After straining, add 2 g of manganese. Spray every 2 weeks.

If signs of the disease are already noticeable, you cannot do without chemicals. Tomatoes are immediately sprayed with fungicides. Prepare a solution and carry out processing according to the instructions for use.
