Characteristics and description of the variety

Tomatoes of the Ocean variety are mid-ripening; fruits fully ripen in 95-105 days. The vegetable grows in any area and is not very sensitive to environmental conditions. However, in warm climates, tomato yields are much better.

As for diseases, this variety is characterized by high resistance; tomatoes have good immunity to the most common and dangerous diseases. This is quite good and is a big advantage. Tomato fruits are also suitable for storage; their shelf life is quite high.

You can grow tomatoes both in a greenhouse and in an open area, depending on natural conditions.

The general characteristics of the Ocean variety tomato are as follows:

  1. The bushes are powerful, strong, the spreading of the stems is average. There are many leaves, they are medium in size and deep green in color. The height of the plant reaches 1.5 m. Therefore, when growing, and especially when choosing a site, this should be taken into account.
  2. During the flowering period, a simple inflorescence is formed.
  3. Tomato fruits are neat with medium weight, bright red in color. The pulp is fleshy, juicy, light red in color, the skin is smooth. When cutting, a crunch is heard, which indicates the high density of the tomato. Up to 12 fruits can form in a brush.
  4. Excellent taste properties, thanks to which the vegetable is used in the preparation of many dishes and preparations for the winter.
  5. The plant tolerates temperature changes well and withstands many stressful situations, therefore it is highly marketable and suitable for sale.
  6. The Ocean variety vegetable is characterized by a long fruiting period, which extends until autumn. Therefore, the harvest is rich and the fruits ripen smoothly.

Note! Due to the large height of the plant, it is very important to properly care for it, promptly use supports, tie it down and chop it.

Although bright orange tomatoes ripen early, they can be stored for a very long time without losing their presentation or taste. The thick skin protects against cracking on the bushes and during heat treatment.

Ocean tomato yield

Thanks to prolonged fruiting and the presence of a large number of fruits on one cluster, it is possible to obtain high yields from the Ocean tomato. From one bush you can collect up to 5 kg or more.

The amount of harvest largely depends on the observance of sufficient care of the plantings and correct cultivation techniques.

How to grow Ocean tomatoes

From the time of sowing, it will take approximately several weeks before the gardener sees seedlings. Taking into account the official description of the variety and reviews, Ocean tomatoes develop from this moment until the formation of the first ripe tomatoes in 90 days. Sometimes the plant may need an additional 5–10 days. This growing season and taking into account the climate of a particular region will help you choose the best time to transplant tomatoes.

Sowing work begins after disinfection of the seed material. It is recommended to use a growth stimulator for soaking. The procedure for this treatment takes only 20 minutes, and the benefits for the plant are undeniable.

The main rule for growing tomatoes at the seedling stage is to provide the plants with warmth and light. The last factor is required for the culture after the sprouts have pecked. Light can be either natural or from an artificial source in the form of a fluorescent lamp. The first, in the case of tomatoes, is preferable.

Advantages and disadvantages

The Ocean variety tomato has many advantages, which explains its high demand among summer residents and gardeners. The main positive qualities of the vegetable are:

  1. Excellent taste. The fruit tastes a little sweet, it is perfect for fresh consumption, pickling, and preparing various dishes.
  2. It stores well and has excellent keeping quality.
  3. The fruits have excellent resistance to dangerous diseases and some pests.
  4. The ripening of the vegetable takes place on average 65 days from the moment the seedlings are planted in the ground and is characterized by long-term fruiting.
  5. The plant successfully withstands stressful situations and is characterized by high marketability.

The Ocean tomato variety has no disadvantages as such; the only thing that summer residents and gardeners note is its high growth, which interferes with care and requires special adaptations and compliance with care measures.

Growing technology

In order to achieve a rich harvest of tomatoes, it is necessary to adhere to generally accepted rules for growing and caring for the plant. It is necessary to plant seeds for seedlings in time, prepare the soil and plant plants in open ground.

Growing tomato seedlings

The traditional method of growing tomatoes is to plant seeds into seedlings. To do this, prepare special boxes or small plastic containers with soil, which should have a hole in the bottom. This allows you to enrich the soil with oxygen and avoid some diseases characteristic of seedlings, for example, blackleg.

Peat and sand can be used as a planting mixture. When sticking seeds, they should not be immersed too deeply. Because they will become weak and stretched out.

Before planting, the substrate is thoroughly moistened. After planting the seeds, the containers are placed in a room where a certain temperature, humidity and lighting are maintained.

Important! After planting the seeds, watering is carried out as necessary, excluding heavy moisture, so as not to provoke rot.

Preparation of planting material

To plant seedlings in open ground, the plants should be carefully prepared. To do this, 2-3 weeks before the intended planting, the sprouts are taken outside, gradually increasing the residence time. This is how they harden and get used to external environmental conditions.

As for the growing location, it is better to choose a southern area. This will increase the yield of tomatoes. The soil must contain a sufficiently acceptable pH value. It is believed that tomatoes can be planted in one place for 2-3 years. But in this case, it is imperative to apply mineral and organic fertilizers annually.

It is important to dig up the soil in the fall and apply fertilizing as necessary. This can be superphosphate, potassium, nitrogen, compost, peat or humus. They will help accelerate the growth and development of plants, and strengthen its immunity to common diseases.

Note! It is believed that the best predecessors of tomatoes for growing in open ground or a greenhouse are onions, cucumbers, zucchini and cabbage.

Planting tomato seedlings in open ground

Ocean tomato seedlings should be planted in early June, when the weather is already warm and frost has passed. Vegetable planting is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. In a previously dug area, shallow holes are made, maintaining an interval of 30 cm between bushes and 50 cm between rows.
  2. The wells are thoroughly moistened with water up to 1 liter for each.
  3. The seedlings are immersed in the ground up to the middle of the stem and sprinkled well with dry soil.

Subsequently, water the plants as needed.

A greenhouse or greenhouse can also serve as a place for planting seedlings. In them, the tomato develops faster, so the harvest is earlier and bears fruit until autumn.

Reviews

Antonina:

“I recently encountered the problem of the plant quickly withering after the flowering stage. In fact, even the ovary did not have time to form normally. I have a lot of experience growing tomatoes, but I spent a long time looking for the cause of the problem. We had to change the feeding materials, only after that we were able to save the healthy bushes.”

Christina:

“An excellent variety that rarely gets sick. Of course, you can’t escape pests, no matter how strong the variety. The main thing is that after each attack the plant quickly recovers.”

“I had to treat the leaves with a soap solution when I noticed larvae on the foliage closer to the ground. The culture was not particularly affected, probably because I reacted to the problem in time.”

Vladislav:

“Last year we had to remove several bushes from the garden that were infected with a nematode. This year I planted tomatoes in a greenhouse; I will not return them to open ground until I have completely disinfected the soil.”

“The fruits are tasty and fleshy, I use them fresh. The yield is high. Tomatoes can be stored at room temperature for up to three weeks.”

“I forgot to disinfect the seeds before sowing. I paid for the mistake in full. It’s amazing how the plant still managed to form so many tomatoes.”

Rules of care

Proper care of tomatoes is carried out in watering, hilling and weeding the beds, as well as in the formation of a bush, controlling pests and diseases, and applying fertilizers.

Hilling of plants is carried out every 12 days, in which case the areas between the rows and holes are used. Along with loosening the soil, weeds are removed. This helps enrich the soil with oxygen, avoid stagnation of moisture and accelerate the growth of tomatoes.

Tomatoes should be watered daily, spending up to 0.9 liters of water per hole. Particularly abundant watering is carried out during the flowering of the bushes and the formation of fruits. After watering, it is advisable to loosen the beds. You should not fill the holes to prevent rotting. Therefore, during the rainy season, watering is not carried out.

To ensure intensive growth and development of fruits, Ocean tomatoes must be fed regularly. During the entire summer period this is done 3 times. The first fertilizer is applied after 12 days from the moment of planting the seedlings. At this stage, mineral and organic fertilizers are used. This can be ammonium nitrate, mullein, potassium compounds, manure and superphosphate.

Then the tomato is fertilized during the flowering period and during the beginning of fruit formation. Then you can also use organic and mineral fertilizers.

In addition to these methods of care, the tomato bush needs to be chopped from time to time, that is, cut off excess castings and stems. As the bush grows, special cuttings are used to fix the plants. They are placed at a distance of 9-10 cm from the planting.

Note! To combat pests and diseases, it is allowed to use both folk remedies and special preparations for spraying plants.

Tomato diseases and pests

Tomatoes of the Ocean variety have increased resistance to common and dangerous diseases. However, if the principles of cultivation and care are not followed, such a vegetable can also be susceptible to certain diseases. Of these, the most common are the following:

  1. Rot - found in many garden plants. It develops due to improper care, in particular due to excessive moisture. It is caused by the appearance of dark brown and black spots on the fruits, which initially have a small area and subsequently grow, affecting the entire tomato. Control measures include spraying and proper watering.
  2. Spotting is a damage not only to leaves, but also to fruits. Identified by the appearance of dark spots. If left untreated, it leads to the complete death of the plant.
  3. Late blight - according to the appearance of symptoms, the disease is similar to spotting. It may appear in tomatoes as a result of insufficient care and planting in an area where potatoes are close.
  4. Viruses are a common disease of tomatoes. It is characterized by curling of the leaves, they begin to dry out, become covered with dark spots, dry out and fall off. If left untreated, the entire bush is affected and gradually dies. To combat viruses, various spray preparations are used.

Common tomato pests include mole crickets, whiteflies, wireworms and slugs.

Note! To combat various diseases and pests of the Ocean variety of tomatoes, it is very important to follow the cultivation and care technology, choose the right soil, and apply fertilizers in a timely manner.
