Description of the tomato variety Gnome Shadow Fight
This tomato variety was developed in the early 2000s. thanks to the efforts of breeders from the USA and Australia. In 2013, certain improvements were made by Russian specialists, after which the Gnome Boy with Shadow variety was adapted for cultivation in the Russian Federation. It is not included in the State Register of Breeding Achievements, but there is evidence that the variety is listed in the register for the Volga-Vyatka region.
According to the recommendations here, it can be grown even in open beds. Consequently, the culture will take root in other regions (in the Urals, Siberia and the North-West it is better in greenhouse conditions). The variety got its name because of the dwarf size of the bush and small fruits. The variety belongs to the “Gnome” series, which includes other low-growing varieties (for example, the Cheerful Gnome tomato).
Main characteristics of the tomato Gnome Shadowboxing:
- determinant (grows to a certain limit);
- medium height (80-100 cm);
- mid-season (tomatoes are formed in 100-110 days).
The bush consists of 2-3 powerful trunks, which are formed randomly (without formation). The leaves are quite wide, dark green in color, with a wrinkled surface. The shape resembles potato tops. The inflorescence is of a simple type, the first of them is formed above the 6th or 7th leaf, then they come every 1-2. The bushes are quite compact and neat. 4-6 ripe tomatoes are formed on the brush. Gnome Shadow Fight.
Description of fruits
Tomatoes have an unusual shape - elongated cream with a pointed tip. The color is very attractive - the background is golden-orange, there are splashes of dark crimson, yellow and green, and near the stalk - closer to blue and purple. On a longitudinal section, 2 seed chambers are noticeable. They can be collected and planted for next season. The seedlings will bear fruit because Gnome Shadowboxing is a tomato variety and not a hybrid. The tomatoes are small in size - 7-10 cm long, weighing on average 80-90 g. The surface is glossy, without wrinkles or ribbing.
When cut, the flesh is a beautiful pink color, the consistency is dense and juicy. The taste is excellent: sweet shades are felt, there is a delicate sourness, and overall tender. There is a noticeable pleasant aroma, which many describe as fruity. These tomatoes are very pleasant to eat fresh, as well as used in various preparations.

“Gnomes”:
(This group contains varieties of a new subspecies of tomatoes of amateur selection. In general, they are united by the main technical characteristic of the structure of the bush, namely, a strong standard plant, as a rule, with rather large elastic leaves, as well as relatively short stature ( up to 1m)
GNOME ARCTIC ROSE (DWARF ARCTIC ROSE).
Early ripening, very productive variety. The lowest of the gnomes. Bush 40-50cm high, potato-type leaf. The fruits are flat-round, dense, ribbed, crimson in color, with a good refreshing taste, weighing 100-140g.

ROSELLA Bicolor (ROZELLA).
The tallest and, perhaps, the most beautiful variety in this group. The plant is 1.2-1.5 m high, with potato-type leaves. The fruits have a very attractive flat-round shape, ideally even and smooth, dense, fleshy, golden in color with a thick pink tint, weighing 250-330g, and have a wonderful sweet taste.
ROSELLA PURPLE.
Mid-season. Bush up to 60cm high, potato-type leaves. The fruits are flat-round, slightly ribbed, purple-pink in color, fleshy, very good taste, weighing 150-250g (individual first fruits weigh up to 300g).
TASMANIAN CHOCOLATE.
An excellent mid-season variety with abundant and long-lasting fruiting. The bush is about 80 cm high. The fruits are flat-round, slightly ribbed, dense and fleshy, resistant to cracking, rich purple-brown color. The tomatoes are very tasty, weighing up to 300g.
GNOME SWEET SUE.
Mid-season, productive variety. The plant is very beautiful, with dense super-potato leaves, up to 1 m high, requires garter and moderate shaping of the bush. The fruits are round in shape, dense, resistant to cracking, fleshy, weighing 100-170 g, light yellow, sometimes with a slight pink blush, the taste is very sweet, aromatic.
DWARF SHADOW BOXING.
Mid-season, very productive variety. The bush is 80-100 cm high, requires garter and moderate shaping. The fruits are unusually beautiful - elongated (7-9 cm), crimson-red with thick yellow streaks and a rich purple-black tan from the top (sunny side) of the fruit. Tomatoes have excellent consistency, dense, fleshy with a small amount of juice, tasty, weighing up to 100-120g. The variety is very resistant to fungal diseases and viruses (fruiting until frost).
Characteristics of tomato Gnome Shadowboxing
Tomatoes of this variety are classified as mid-season. The fruits reach the stage of technical ripeness (green, fully formed in size) approximately 100 days after the seedlings emerge. Therefore, the first harvest can be harvested in mid-June and sent to ripen in a dark place or left on the bush.
Tomato productivity Gnome Shadowboxing and fruiting
Despite the fact that Gnome Shadow Fight is a determinate, medium-growing tomato variety, it produces a very good harvest. If grown in a greenhouse, up to 4.5 kg of tomatoes can be harvested from 1 bush per season.
Growing method | In the greenhouse | In an open garden |
From 1 plant, kg | 4-4,5 | 3-3,5 |
From 1 m2, kg* | 16-18 | 12-14 |
*For 1 m2 you can plant 4 tomato bushes Gnome Shadow Fight - the yield calculation is based on this number of plants. With denser planting, you can grow 5 bushes.
To get maximum yield, it is better to grow tomatoes in a greenhouse. In addition, it is recommended to follow the standard rules of agricultural technology:
- Regular watering and fertilizing.
- Ventilation of the greenhouse.
- Tying the bush to a support.
- Step-sonning - as needed.
- Preventive spring treatment with fungicide.
The variety Gnome Shadow Fight is a high-yielding variety
Area of application of fruits
Tomatoes Gnome Boy with shadow are very pleasant when fresh. Due to the fact that the fruits are juicy and miniature, they are excellent for preparing many dishes and preparations:
- salads;
- soups;
- sauces;
- second courses;
- tomato juice;
- canned vegetables (lecho, caviar);
- whole-fruit canning (pickling, salting).
Resistance to diseases and pests
Gnome Shadow Fight tomatoes have fairly good immunity to major tomato diseases. Thus, thanks to the short ripening period, they have time to “escape” late blight. But in any case, when growing bushes, preventive measures should be taken:
- moderate (not too abundant) watering;
- regular ventilation of the greenhouse;
- mulching roots with straw, peat;
- treatment of seedlings with any fungicide.
It is also recommended to periodically inspect tomato bushes for traces of insects. They can be collected by hand or washed off with water. After this, the plants are treated with insecticides or homemade solutions based on folk recipes.
Characteristics of the variety
The Gnome's fruits have a neat, pepper-like, elongated shape. Tomatoes are medium in size, ranging from seven to nine centimeters. The color is very unusual, it is very different from the color of other tomatoes. Red is not the main color. It shows bright orange, gold and pink stripes. At the very top the color becomes much darker and goes from purple to black. The side that is in the sun will have a darker color. Up to five or even more shades can be distinguished on one fruit. The size of gnomes is not very large, however, their yield is quite respectable.
These tomatoes look very impressive on the bush. Therefore, plants of this variety can also be used for decorative purposes, to decorate a garden plot, thus receiving double benefits.
The fruits do not have a lot of juice, their pulp is dense, and the tomato peel is also highly dense. When cut, tomatoes are pink in color. Ripe tomatoes are consumed fresh, and they are also ideal for whole-fruit canning; they can also be used to make preparations for the winter. Multi-colored fruits look beautiful both in jars and freshly cut.
Advantages and disadvantages of the variety
The main advantage of this variety is very unusual tomatoes with a bright, distinctive taste and fruity aroma. In addition, tomatoes are very productive and have good immunity to diseases. This makes it easy to grow them in almost any conditions.
Tomatoes can be left to ripen on the branch
pros
- original taste;
- unusual appearance;
- all-purpose tomatoes;
- very good immunity;
- high yield (especially for determinate varieties);
- universal purpose - suitable for fresh consumption and processing.
Minuses
- need to be periodically pruned;
- the bush must be tied to a support;
- the plant is quite sensitive to temperature changes.
Important! If the air temperature has dropped too much, the leaves of the Gnome Boy with Shadow tomato become purple. Then, as the temperature rises, they regain their natural green color.
Maturation period
As stated earlier, the “Gnome Shadow Fight” variety is classified as a mid-season crop that produces mature fruits within 4 months after the appearance of the first shoots. This variety is generally resistant to changes in weather conditions and is unpretentious, so tomatoes can be planted either under film or in a greenhouse, or in open ground. However, in colder regions of Russia it is still better to plant tomatoes in a greenhouse or greenhouse.
The bushes of the plant are usually small and rarely exceed a height of 1 meter, but they need to be constantly monitored, the stems must be tied up and ripe fruits must be collected, as fleshy tomatoes often begin to overhang and the stem may break. Bushes of this variety do not have many main trunks: often the plant has two or three bushes.

Features of cultivation
Tomato seeds Gnome Fight with shadow can be planted as seedlings 60-70 days before transferring to the garden bed or greenhouse. For cultivation, they use purchased soil or their own mixture, for example, from leaf soil, peat, sand and compost (in approximately equal quantities).
Seeds are planted in boxes, containers or peat tablets to a depth of 1 cm. Moisten abundantly, put in a warm place (25 degrees), cover with a lid and grow with lighting. Then they dive after the formation of 2-3 true leaves. A week later, complex mineral fertilizer is given and the temperature is reduced to 22 degrees, and 2 weeks before transplanting, they are hardened at 15-17.
Tomato seedlings quickly take root immediately after transplanting into open ground
Tomato bushes Gnome Fight with shadow are transferred to the ground in the second half of May, and to the greenhouse 7-10 days earlier. Place at a distance of 40-50 cm, leaving 60 cm between rows. Water 1-2 times a week, apply complex fertilizer or liquid organic matter 2 times a month (up to 4 times per season in total). The bushes are tied to a support and periodically pruned. The soil is loosened and weeded as needed.
Advice! In order for the soil to retain moisture longer, it must be mulched with straw, peat, and hay.
Tomatoes Gnome: the richest series of varieties
Tomatoes from the Dwarf series are the brainchild of the collective work of breeders from different countries. American and Australian amateur vegetable growers were the first to develop this variety at the beginning of our millennium. Soon breeders from Russia and other countries joined them. Work on developing varieties of this tomato variety continues.
Breeders initially set themselves the task of creating a variety of tomatoes characterized by abundant fruiting in cramped conditions, and at the same time viable. We should give credit to the enthusiasts; they accomplished these tasks.
Description of the variety
The bushes of the Gnome series are not small, as you might think when you hear the name - tomatoes grow up to 140 cm in height. But on poor soils the height of the bushes barely reaches half a meter. The average weight of tomatoes is from 50 to 180 grams. Of course, the varieties of the series differ from each other, but they all have many common properties.
Ask and receive useful advice from professional gardeners and experienced summer residents.{amp}gt;{amp}gt;
- Gnome tomatoes are not grown;
- the bushes are at least slightly spreading, but compact and do not require space;
- early ripening fruits;
- each bush with one trunk (occasionally – two trunks);
- leaves with an emerald tint, and their surface is wrinkled;
- stems are strong and thick;
- You can grow Cheerful Gnome tomatoes even on a balcony or loggia, for this you will need a barrel;
- The variety is high-yielding, resistant to diseases characteristic of nightshades, which corresponds to the description. Macrosporia and late blight do not affect bushes.
It is interesting that each variety of Dwarf differs not only in taste, although it is always pleasant, but also in the color of the skin and pulp. As for taste, the differences in this regard between the types of Gnome tomatoes, judging by the reviews, are striking. Dwarf tomatoes have a sweet, sour and even spicy taste.
The cheerful gnome, as the description says, does not have to be attached to a stick. At the same time, gardeners advise from experience: the tomato harvest is often large, so tie the branches with synthetic thread.
Its productivity is high, and all the fruits ripen almost simultaneously. Tomatoes are golden yellow in color with shiny skin, thin but dense, not cracking. The advantages of Golden Heart tomatoes are that they are stored fresh for a long time and can withstand transportation over long distances well.
The fruits of the Thong subspecies are round and flattened.
Perhaps this is the most interesting subtype of Dwarf. Unripe fruits are almost purple at first. As they ripen, the color begins to change, with ripe fruits turning purple with an olive tint. Moreover, on one bush there are no two fruits with the same color.
Striped Anto also has an interesting coloring. At first, the fruits are yellow, purple, olive or pink. Ripe tomatoes take on a brick-red hue with black stripes.
It looks like a Christmas tree, because bright multi-colored tomatoes grow on one Gnome bush.
It got its name because of the unusual shape of the fruit - elongated, with a noticeable nose.
- Large gnome is one of the new subspecies of the variety.
The fruits are dark pink. They are shaped like a flattened ball. - Wild Fred.
It is distinguished by brown tomatoes with a purple tint.Rules for growing tomatoes Gnome
There are no fundamental differences in growing this variety of tomatoes. Only residents of the fertile South can afford to do without growing seedlings by immediately sowing tomatoes in open ground. Residents of Central Russia and the northern regions have to grow seedlings.
In addition, if the climate is cool, the Gnome tomato may not have time to ripen; it is better to plant the vegetable in the ground not in beds, but in greenhouses or greenhouses. This way you will protect the plant from freezing. Sprouts are planted in the evening, morning or afternoon - if it is cloudy outside.
After transplanting the seedlings, the variety does not require special care. Diseases do not cause problems, but among the pests, the Colorado potato beetle sometimes causes trouble - they fight it with insecticides. Choose any type of Gnome tomatoes - the well-known Cheerful Gnome tomatoes, bred especially for our country, or the amazing Shadow Boxing.
The main growing conditions are to regularly water, loosen the soil, weed, and fertilize. First, phosphorus fertilizers are required, then, when the bushes begin to bloom and fruits set, water them with nitrogen-containing products, and when ripe, with potassium fertilizers. The vegetable is responsive to fertilizers. The plant loves moisture, but do not water the bushes with a shower from a watering can, use drip irrigation.

Pest and disease control
Since tomatoes of this variety have good immunity, it is enough to carry out only 1 preventive treatment in the spring (before transplanting the seedlings into the garden or immediately after that). Use any fungicide, for example:
- "Topaz";
- "Tattu";
- "Skor";
- "Ordan";
- "Fitosporin";
- Bordeaux mixture.
If insects are found, you need to treat the plants with a solution of baking soda, wood ash, tobacco dust, ammonia, infusion of garlic or onion peels. You can also use insecticides:
- "Fitoverm";
- "Biotlin";
- "Aktara";
- "Decis";
- "Karate";
- "Fufanon."
Spraying of preparations is carried out in the absence of rain and strong wind, preferably during sunset. If chemicals are used, you can start harvesting tomatoes no earlier than the specified waiting period (usually 5-7 days).
