Properties of the variety
San Marzano tomatoes (and its other varieties - San Marzano 2 and San Marzano Nano) are a non-hybrid variety. Currently, hundreds of artificial hybrids have been bred. It is believed that they produce a larger harvest and better resist diseases and pests, but not all summer residents and garden lovers give them preference.
The fact is that the fruits of non-hybrid natural varieties of tomatoes are much tastier and contain significantly more vitamins and microelements . Varietal tomatoes have genetic resistance to adverse weather conditions, as generation after generation they grew in a certain area. Tomatoes produce full-fledged offspring, and even a novice gardener will not have any difficulty in obtaining the seeds themselves and sowing them next year.
Even at low temperatures, San Marzano tomatoes are able to bear fruit consistently. In light of the ongoing climatic changes in nature, this characteristic of the variety is especially valuable. San Marzano is a mid-early tomato variety. The first harvest can be obtained 110 - 115 days after sowing the seeds.
Being indeterminate, the plants have unlimited growth and are able to reach a height of 120 to 150 cm.

The fruits have an excellent sweet and sour taste. Perfect for fresh consumption, in salads and vegetable slices. Good for winter wrappings, especially for canning whole fruits. Thanks to the ease of peeling, they are suitable for preparing tomato juice and paste.
Tomatoes have good shelf life and can be transported over long distances without loss of commercial quality.
Tomato San Marzano Nano (Lycopersicon esculentum)

I would say that this is not S-M, the shape of the fruit is too smooth; in S-M the ribbing is more pronounced. Sorry, if I'm wrong, a lot depends on the growing conditions, but its general signs are very obvious. I had San Marzano 2 in greenhouse culture. The bush is now under 2 meters, it has grown sharply in the last couple of weeks, although the whole season it was a meter with a cap. The fruit is long (up to 15-18 cm), light, when fully ripe, with soft flesh, practically without voids, but lighter in weight than usual, no juiciness. When cut across, the cuboid shape is visible (it is not round in diameter, but a rounded square), the fruit has 2 seed chambers, and during cold weather, some of the seeds inside are dark. There was no top, like other long fruits, not even a hint. No taste. Dry very well after sweetening, salting and sprinkling with oil. Basically a technician.
Transfer
For planting, it is necessary to prepare the place in advance, namely, add organic fertilizers in the fall so that they rot over the winter. In the spring, you need to additionally treat the soil with mineral fertilizers:
- potassium chloride,
- double superphosphate,
- wood ash.
During the growing season, tomatoes need to be fed 4 more times.
Description of tomato variety Chio-Chio-san
The F1 hybrid Cio-Cio-san became known almost 20 years ago, and in 1999 it was registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation. Its main purpose, according to the official document, is to satisfy the needs of small farms, amateur gardeners, and summer residents in all regions of our country, since it is recommended to cultivate the hybrid in protected soil. Of course, in warm regions it will grow well even without a greenhouse, but even in simple film shelters it produces a significantly larger harvest, which is practically independent of the weather conditions “outside”.
The authorship of the hybrid belongs to the well-known, the idea when breeding it, apparently, was the versatility of use and cultivation. In principle, this is how it happened: this tomato is known throughout our country, as well as in neighboring Ukraine, Belarus, and Moldova.
Cio-Cio-san is considered a medium-ripening tomato: the first fruits are ready for harvesting approximately 4 months after sowing the seeds in boxes for growing seedlings. It is seedling cultivation that is practiced in almost all regions, although in the south you can plant this tomato in a greenhouse directly from seeds. This is a typical representative of indeterminate varieties, that is, the growth of the bush is not limited by anything: give it free rein, it will grow without stopping. In reality, if you do not pinch the top, the bush grows up to 2.5 meters, so, naturally, it requires shaping and timely tying up.
Cio-Cio-san tomato bushes are very tall, they are often tied directly to the ceiling and all excess branches are removed
Chio-Chio-san's leaves are of normal size, dark green in color, slightly corrugated. The first flower (and also fruit) raceme appears above the 9th leaf, and then every next 3 leaves new ones are formed. The fruits are glossy, egg-shaped, small: their weight is only about 40 g. The main color of a ripe tomato is pink, it contains 2-3 seed nests with a small number of small seeds, the skin is thick and dense. Since the number of fruits on a bush is huge, the total yield of the variety is high, reaching 8 kg/m2, but cases of obtaining up to 6 kg from each bush are also described. At the same time, the yield of the harvest is quite uniform: most of the fruits ripen almost simultaneously.
The taste of tomatoes is rated as excellent, sweetish, and this applies to both fresh and canned fruits. The juice made from them is also wonderful, but its yield is relatively small, so this tomato cannot be considered the best choice for preparing juices, pastes, and sauces. The variety is often called dessert, but the aroma of the fruit is weakly expressed. The crop is characterized by good transportability and long shelf life, which undoubtedly benefits farmers who produce garden produce for commercial purposes.
The variety is considered drought- and disease-resistant, tolerates extreme heat well, is not critical to partial shade, but cannot boast of particular resistance to extreme cold, like most varieties of tomatoes. You should not leave ripe fruits on the bushes: if they become overripe, the risk of cracking is high.
Stepchildren and care
A few weeks after planting in a permanent place, you need to cut off the side and weak shoots of the tomatoes, leaving only 2 to 3 strong stems. In the future, they will form a bush. Pruning is carried out in order to achieve the highest yield.
The description of plant care includes 3 components. It is necessary to systematically water the bushes at the roots, loosen the soil around the tomato and hill up 2–3 times per season. Tomatoes reach 1.5 meters in height, and therefore it is necessary to provide the bush with support and garter in a timely manner.
Please share your feedback on the taste and use of the San Marzano tomato variety
Good afternoon, Maxim. For some reason, no one responded to your request in 2 weeks. Really, none of the seven-dacha gardens grew. Today I finally tried a real one, I was at the Flowers Expo exhibition, where the chief agronomist of one of the companies showed his tomatoes (varieties) (I lost my business card and can’t find it quickly), and among the tomatoes there were also long cream (similar to the Cheerful Gnome from Myazina), I asked: what is this?, they answered me San Marzano (from Italy) and gave me one tomato. Well, what can I tell you: the tomato is very tasty, the wall thickness is 1 cm, there is little liquid, but the walls are juicy, there are also few seeds. In my opinion, it is an ideal option for freezing and preparing sun-dried tomatoes. But they warned that it is not very productive (but this is a relative concept), for me 3 kg per bush is productive, but for some it is not enough. Where can I buy? If you surf the Internet, there are a lot of offers, but you cannot guarantee the reliability of the sites. Everyone works on an advance payment basis and only forwarding, no pickup (in such cases I have doubts about honesty). I’ll say in advance that I won’t share yet, although I chose tomato seeds, but maybe next year I can share
If you need a variety for freezing and for making sun-dried tomatoes, pay attention to the Palmira tomato (in my opinion Gavrish), very similar to San Marzano, a little less tasty, but orange in color. Good luck and success in gardening. Length 8-10 cm, I forgot to measure exactly
