Description and characteristics of the variety

Tomato Wessel's Violet Pride belongs to the indeterminate group, is tall and strong. Among the features of shoots, agricultural technologists pay attention to the following characteristics:

  • height 1.9-2 m;
  • trunks are semi-spreading;
  • foliage is moderate;
  • 5-7 tomatoes are tied in clusters;
  • There are 8-9 brushes in total.

Ripening occurs in medium terms. Usually this is 114-120 days from germination.

Tomato Description:

  • average weight varies between 100-150 g;
  • large specimens weigh 200-220 g;
  • purple color with purple tints;
  • the flesh is dense, moderately juicy, fleshy;
  • The skin is strong, thin, but does not crack.

The taste is characteristic - a pleasant sweetness joins the tomato sourness.

Agricultural technology

Wessel's purple pride is an indeterminate variety, so sowing and further care are slightly different from cultivating conventional varieties.

Preparing seeds for sowing

Sowing of seeds is planned in early March. To do this, the seeds are wrapped in a damp cloth for several days for germination.

To disinfect planting material, sprouted seeds must be kept in a weak solution of potassium permanganate for about half an hour, and then washed with warm running water.

And at the last stage, it is advisable to keep the seeds in a growth stimulator.

Sowing seeds

To sow seeds, pots approximately 10x10 cm in size with nutritious soil are first prepared. The planting material is buried 2 cm, sprinkled with earth on top and sprayed with water at room temperature from a spray bottle.

Important! The soil for sowing should consist of humus, sand, peat and soil.

The pots are covered with a transparent covering material (film or glass) and placed in a warm place well lit by the sun. The covering material must be removed for some time every day for ventilation. And also regularly moisten the soil, preventing it from drying out. When the first shoots appear, the film or glass is removed.

Picking seedlings

When 2-3 true leaves appear on the sprouts, the seedlings are planted. This is necessary to further strengthen the root system.

Make a small hole in plastic cups with nutritious soil prepared in advance and transplant the sprouts along with lumps of earth on the roots. Gently compact the soil and spray with warm water. Place the cups in a warm and well-lit room for 60 days, regularly moistening the soil and preventing it from drying out.

Planting seedlings in the garden

Seedlings are planted in the garden in mid-May. For this variety, loamy soils fertilized with organic matter are preferable. The place should be sunny and in no case shaded, well protected from the winds.

Depressions are made in the ground in advance and the seedlings are transplanted along with clods of earth. 4 plants are placed per 1 sq.m.

After transplanting, it is necessary to water the seedlings with water at room temperature.

It is desirable that the predecessors of tomatoes in the garden be legumes and pumpkin crops. It is not advisable to plant tomatoes next to potatoes.

If the seedlings were planted in early May, then the seedlings must be covered with film for a while. This measure will allow you to get a large and high-quality harvest.

Seedling care

Caring for seedlings of this variety is not difficult at all and consists of forming bushes, tying them up, watering and fertilizing.

Watering

Watering is carried out regularly, preventing the soil from drying out. But you shouldn’t moisten the soil too much to avoid the development of rot and blackleg. The soil should be moistened only at the root.

In the variety Wessel's Purple Pride, the root system, in addition to the main root, also consists of adventitious roots, which help the large plant obtain nutrients from the soil. Therefore, when watering, you need to make sure that the water does not wash away the soil near the stem.

If a tomato grows in a greenhouse, it is advisable to loosen the soil after watering - this will allow excess moisture to evaporate and prevent the formation of rot.

Tying up bushes

Tomatoes of this variety need staking. For this, it is best to use special trellises or agricultural mesh. But you can use self-made long sticks.

Feeding

Fertilizing is carried out with complex mineral fertilizers, which can be purchased in specialized stores. It is extremely necessary to apply mineral fertilizers, since if there is a lack of nutrients, the weak root will not be able to nourish the upper part of the bush, and, accordingly, crop growth may stop.

Feeding is carried out in several stages:

  • during the flowering period, the plant needs phosphorus-containing preparations;
  • during fruit filling, nitrogen and potassium fertilizers are applied;
  • when the rest of the brushes begin to bloom, phosphorus fertilizers are applied again;
  • Before harvesting, when the fruits ripen, potassium is added.

Formation of bushes

When forming a plant, it is necessary to pinch off all the side branches and stepsons, leaving the central stem. Stepchildren require nutrients that the central trunk does not receive - and this leads to a significant reduction in yield. Side branches, in addition, create additional density, which interferes with active air circulation and provokes the development of powdery mildew and gray rot. The lower leaves must be removed during plant growth.

You can form a bush with 2 stems. In this case, the second stem should be lower than the first brush. On the second stem, 3 brushes are usually formed, and then its growth is stopped.

Tomato diseases

The variety Wessel's Purple Pride is a tomato with high immunity. But when grown in a greenhouse, in conditions of high humidity, the appearance of blossom end rot or blackleg is still possible. Common tomato pests may also appear.

Tomato diseases can be prevented using calcium nitrate by periodically spraying the bushes with this solution. To prevent fungal diseases, you can use preparations containing copper and sulfur. In pest control, it is worth using special preparations “Tattu”, “Infinito”, “Alyette” and “Ridomil Gold”.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the variety:

  • productivity;
  • ideal for pickling and canning;
  • wonderful taste and product criteria;
  • simple agricultural techniques;
  • transportability and keeping quality;
  • extended fruiting - until October frosts;
  • resistance to variable weather conditions.

Of the minuses:

  • needs good lighting;
  • the importance of fertilizing;
  • not suitable for areas with a short summer season;
  • The vegetative part takes a long time to form.

Agricultural technology and reviews from gardeners

Tomatoes do not require special attention when growing. You just need to follow the general rules:

  • sow seeds for seedlings (having previously disinfected them in a manganese solution) 55-60 days before transferring them to a greenhouse or greenhouse;
  • pick sprouts at the stage of 1-2 true leaves;
  • avoid excess moisture;
  • 1-1.5 weeks before planting in the ground, seedlings must be hardened;
  • planting density - 3-4 plants per 1 sq. m.;
  • formation of a bush with 2 stems.

On thematic forums there are a large number of reviews from farmers about this amazing tomato. Here are some of them.

  • Antonina from the Yaroslavl region shares: “I’ve been growing Wessel’s Pride for the second year. I like everything about it: the shape (it fits well in jars), the taste (especially in juice and sauce), and the resistance to tomato diseases. And most of all I am pleased with the yield. He knits such wonderful bunches, you can’t take your eyes off them!”
  • Tatyana from Kemerovo: “Before I tried this tomato for the first time, I thought that the expression “melts in your mouth” could only apply to chocolate, and not tomato. Now I say the same about my purple favorite.”
  • Elena from Kostroma writes: “The variety did not cause me much admiration. It is not as dense and meaty as stated. There were a lot of voids in the tomatoes, and only a few specimens were truly fleshy. But the taste is not bad, I would rate it 4 out of five. I’ll grow it for variety, but definitely not as the main one.”

Ruslan from the Rostov region.

In conclusion, we recommend watching the video description, with the help of which you can fully appreciate the merits of the presented tomato and form a final opinion.

Features of purple tomatoes

First of all, dark varieties attract gardeners due to their taste. Purple tomatoes differ from red and pink varieties in their rich sweet taste with fruity notes and bright aroma. This feature is also due to the high content of anthocyanins.

In addition, the “blue” gene ensures longer preservation of the tomato crop. The anitoxidant property allows the pulp not to spoil longer, and the dense peel, characteristic of all varieties, reliably protects against cracking.

In order to gain color, colorful tomatoes need a lot of sunlight. In shaded beds, the blue pigment practically does not appear, so it is recommended to plant purple varieties in the most illuminated places in the greenhouse or garden. In terms of ripening time, most varieties are classified as mid-season. At the same time, the fruiting period lasts longer than most traditional varieties, due to the fact that purple tomatoes are resistant to cold and temperature changes.
