The most unusual varieties of tomatoes in shape, color and taste

Despite all the respect gardeners have for tomatoes, this crop is often grown solely for its benefit, sometimes without noticing its natural beauty and charm. Many people think that tomatoes cannot serve as a source of inspiration. And in vain.

However, if we recall the history of the tomato, it turns out that it came to Europe exclusively as an ornamental plant, because for a long time its fruits were considered poisonous. Today they are the main goal of those who grow tomatoes. Through the efforts of breeders, the image of the classic tomato is being replaced by its younger, more colorful and tasty counterparts, from which an original collection can be assembled.

An experienced tomato grower and tomato collector from Belarus will introduce us to the most amazing of them.

Nadezhda Kuts has been growing tomatoes for more than 30 years, and her collection includes about 400 varieties. Moreover, the bushes grow and bear fruit well not only in the greenhouse, but also in the open ground. Nadezhda Ivanovna is sure that with good care, even the most capricious varieties give an excellent harvest.

A significant part of my tomato collection consists of varieties with unusual fruit colors. Growing them is a lot of fun. You just want to admire these tomatoes; it’s a pity to pick them, much less use them for food, although they are not only beautiful, but also very tasty.

Rita black

A very successful tall variety from the USA. The fruits of Rita are black, beautiful dark brown in color, shaped like pears, very sweet and tasty. Bushes always delight with a good harvest.

Tomatoes can be a source of inspiration if you treat them as a beautiful and original crop. And they, in turn, will certainly become a decoration on your table. An experienced tomato grower recommended only proven varieties grown with her own hands. We hope they will not disappoint you either.

Auria

A wonderful variety, which is popularly called Lady's Finger, Tomato Cucumbers, and Eggplant. The shape is to blame: the fruits are long and narrow. When growing on fertile soils, they grow a little in width, so they look as if they are tied in diameter in several places with a rope.

This is not a hybrid, and seeds can be taken from ripened tomatoes to sow next year. The plant is tall and can reach two or more meters in height. The purpose of the variety is universal, that is, it is suitable for fresh consumption, for preservation, and for the production of tomato juice.

Tomatoes – Striped Black Moor

The Black Moor variety is known to all gardeners, but few people know that it is also available in a striped version. The Striped Moor is as productive, as resistant to adverse conditions and diseases as its younger brother. It is equally tasty both fresh and canned. And its attractive appearance will not leave indifferent more than one connoisseur of tomato beauty. Tall indeterminate.

Pineapple Heirloom

One of the giant tomato varieties. The heirloom pineapple is painted in two colors - yellow and red. This variety has a mild, tropical-sweet flavor. It can grow to enormous size right on the tomato vine. Excellent for slicing due to its meatiness, and also good for canning.

Varieties with elongated elongated fruits

A great variety of such varieties have already been created. One of the first were the Pepper-shaped ones, which now exist in various color variations, of which the most original color is found in the Pepper-shaped striped variety.

Midas

A mid-late variety with elongated orange fruits of 60–100 grams.

Green Zebra

The Green Zebra tomato has green striped fruits with a yellow or orange-red tint. The average weight of the fruit is only 170 grams. Some are concerned that they won't be able to tell when the fruit is ripe. But this is quite simple to understand - you need to wait until the stripes acquire a deeper shade of yellow. These tomatoes have a tart flavor. They can be consumed fresh by those who do not like sweet varieties of tomatoes. They are also perfect for canning due to the low acidity of the fruit.

Unusually colored tomatoes

There are many pink and raspberry-pink varieties: this is the well-known classic Ox's Heart with very large, amazingly tasty fruits, and the above-mentioned Pink Pear.

Orange varieties, characterized by a high content of carotene in fruits, are less common, although many of them have already been created. Shown above is the long-fruited orange variety Midas.

Persimmon

Large-fruited variety with bright orange, very tasty fruits. Ripens quite late. Ripens well indoors.

Zlatava

A very interesting mid-season Czech variety. Round fruits weighing up to 100 grams are orange on the outside and reddish on the inside.

The summer resident is happy because he has a fantastic tomato

A fantastic tomato - it is special - in configuration, color, size, taste. Although such tomatoes are not widely used on large farms, they are very much adored by “tomato gluttons” and, of course, by summer residents. These are, as a rule, exotic varieties of tomatoes.

Black varieties

or, correctly speaking, lilac-red tomatoes are a group of varieties with a color close to blue-black, and have been familiar for quite a long time. The very first of these “tomatoes” in the USSR was created by Soviet agronomists, competent in interspecific selection, in the mid-20th century. It was called "Chocolate". This is where the brown-red varieties of modern tomatoes came from. Further, Europeans, by crossing wild and ordinary tomatoes, obtained a generally purple color, thanks to the presence of anthocyanins, and they became real hits in vegetable gardens.

Green-fruited tomatoes, no less amazing, as described above. They also deserve attention, because they have a very tasty, downright sweet center. In addition, they are well preserved and do not attract thieves, even when ripe.

Orange have a colorful appearance, but also a wonderful taste. The sugar content inside their pulp is high, more than that of simple scarlet tomatoes, which makes them suitable for preparing dietary dishes. In addition, orange fruits contain a lot of beta-carotene, lycopene and mineral salts, which is why such tomatoes are considered medicinal.

Golden and yellow tomatoes can safely be called unique. Their delicate and at the same time juicy taste will not leave anyone indifferent. And a large amount of lycopene will help improve the health of anyone who tastes these golden tomatoes.

Varieties of two-color and “velvet” tomatoes

Two-color tomato "De Barao"

Two-color tomato "Purple Jasper" Velvet tomato variety "Blue Spruce"

Tomatoes with patterned, two-colored fruit colors are no less interesting and delicious than, for example, white or purple tomatoes. But for some reason they are not so widely known among gardeners. When talking about strange tomatoes, one cannot help but say a word about “ velvet tomatoes ,” the fruits of which are extremely peculiar in appearance and very original in taste.

This is interesting

Just a couple of years ago, a hybrid of tomato and potato was created in an English horticultural garden. The company's director, Paul Hansord, admits that to cross two nightshade crops, biologists had to use a white potato variety, as well as cherry tomatoes for open ground. And although the creation of a wonderful root vegetable was facilitated by the usual grafting method, the experiment lasted more than ten years. British breeders nicknamed their creation “TomTato”. The product quickly mastered the beds of New Zealand, where it acquired a second name - “Potato Tom”. The price of one seedling was $22-25. For our gardeners and farmers, this is expensive, but “TomTato” is easily included in the rating of “the most productive tomato varieties”: with high-quality care, you can harvest up to 500 tomatoes and one or two dozen tubers from one wonderful bush.”

Varieties of exotic tomatoes

Many unusual varieties grow well and ripen only in Rostov, Sochi, and Crimea. Well, what should Muscovites, residents of Penza and Kaluga do? Are there any unusual varieties of tomatoes for open ground that can please a summer resident with ripe tomatoes right in the garden? Luckily there is! Here is a description of the most interesting and wonderful varieties.

Tomato variety "Snow White"

Snow-white. An extremely interesting variety of white tomatoes. It begins to ripen in clusters of 5-6 pieces. It's just a pity that it's a long wait. But the seedlings with the first cluster of flowers planted at the end of May in the Moscow region corrected this shortcoming.

Tomato variety "Kiwi exotic"

“Kiwi Exotic” is a rare variety with wonderful fruits, each of which weighs up to a quarter of a kilogram. These tomatoes are more like kiwi fruit. The flavor range of the tomatoes themselves is unique and not similar to any of the tomato varieties.

Tomato variety "Black Cream"

“Black creme” or “black cream” , mid-season, it needs a little more than two months to fully ripen the juiciest tomatoes with an amazing dessert taste. Its dark purple, curved fruits have captured the attention of the best cooks and cooks in the world.

Tomato variety "Blue Spruce"

The Blue Spruce variety is truly a real wonder of breeding work. Red-bloody small balls of tomatoes are completely shrouded in tiny, barely visible fibers; the same velvety quality is present on the leaf blades. Actually, it gives the variety a unique decorative velvety quality. The taste is simple, juicy, you can’t preserve it, but you can make juice.

Tomato variety "Black pineapple"

"Black pineapple" or "Black pineapple" is the strangest two-color variety you can find. The color of his “tomatoes” is gray with imprecise outlines of malachite drops. The pulp is greenish in background with reddish-brown and crimson spots in the center, thick and quite rich in taste. The tomatoes themselves are not sour, flattened, and in greenhouses they can weigh up to one kilogram. Harvest up to 7-12 kg per bush!

Tomato variety “Yellow Drop”

Small bright yellow fruits that weigh about 33 grams, the Yellow Drop or Chinese Bulb varieties are very sweet. But their uniqueness lies not only in their amazing taste: they are completely immune to diseases such as blackleg and Alternaria, as well as unfavorable conditions and lack of care.

Tomato variety "Black Galaxy"

"Black Galaxy" (Black Galaxy) was grown in the USA, which specializes in vegetable hybrids. And this variety is the result of crossing a cultivated variety of “beef tomatoes” with a wild tomato from Chile. It is bluish-black, and on the cut there is no hint of “redness” or “orangeness”, only bluish-purple flesh and blue seeds.

Tomato variety "Zhigalo"

Variety "Zhigalo" carpal and its tomatoes from 100 to 200 grams. There are up to 6 of them in brushes. Their shape is interesting, vaguely reminiscent of the male reproductive organ. And the pulp is sugary, can be preserved perfectly, and the juice is excellent. Moderately resistant variety.

Pink tenderness

If you want to eat pink tomatoes, then plant Pinky Lady or Pinky Rise. These hybrids have large, 200-300 g, even fruits, very beautiful, the same size, pink in color, without a green spot at the stalk. A huge plus of these hybrids is that they do not burst. When ripe, they are suitable for transportation over long distances. However, under the skin they do not have the disgusting white layer of fiber that gives modern hybrids their strength.

The advantage of these varieties is that they are quite resistant to diseases and are affected by late blight at the level of domestic varieties.

Unusually shaped tomatoes

In addition to the traditional round or slightly flattened fruits, tomatoes come in a variety of shapes - ribbed, elongated, pear-shaped, lemon-shaped with a spout.

Smooth, elongated fruits of small size are less prone to cracking compared to large-fruited varieties with flattened oval or ribbed fruits.

Japanese crab

A very large-fruited variety with ribbed, irregularly shaped fruits. Initially it was always red, now it is declared in the State Register as pink.

Rapunzel

An actively advertised imported novelty from the cherry group. It is not in the State Register; on the Internet there are only very dubious, vague descriptions of an obviously advertising nature. Cherry does not have any particularly outstanding advantages over long-proven varieties: they are all small-fruited, early-ripening and cluster-bearing.

Bright gem - very beautiful and tasty bicolor

The tomato bush is tall, indeterminate type. Tomatoes are standard size, round. Unripe fruits have purple shoulders, the rest is green. As a result of ripening, the entire fruit turns bright yellow, almost orange. The hangers become chocolate.

Gorgeous coloring, tomatoes look like toys

Overripe fruits turn red, including the inside, but the upper part remains brown. The taste of the Bright Gem is amazing: sweet, fruity, not a hint of sourness. This is my favorite Bacolor tomato.

Green-fruited varieties

The “latest squeak” of tomato fashion is varieties that remain green even when fully ripe. When fully ripe, they look like unripe fruits of ordinary tomatoes that have just begun to turn brown. This type includes the very similar varieties Boloto, Malachite Box, and Emerald Apple.

Tomato Boloto - a fashionable green-fruited variety “for everyone”

Swamp is a beautiful bronze-green flat-round tomato. I really liked the taste, richly sweet (but not too much) with a slight sourness, I would even say salted beef. The tomato is not for resting, tender and juicy. For me, this is much tastier than the Malachite Box, which I planted in 2012. But this is purely my opinion. The fruit weight ranged from 120 to 320 g.

Swamp, tastes like ordinary tomatoes, nothing special. A bit on the runny side. The malachite box is much tastier and meatier.
