How to preserve dahlias until spring - the best ways for an apartment and a private house

Hello, dear flower growers! Let's talk about dahlias. What new can be said about grandma's flower? Everything seems simple. I planted it and dug it up in the fall. What if there is nothing to plant in the spring? Have the roots disappeared over the winter? This is because gardeners do not know how to store dahlias in winter.

Let's cultivate botanical literacy in ourselves.
ways to preserve dahlias for the winter
. Professionals do it “according to science”, some as their ancestors taught. Let's try to figure out what methods exist.

When to dig up dahlias

First, let’s ask ourselves the question: is it possible NOT to dig up dahlias for the winter? Solid no. This is a heat-loving plant. It cannot stay over the winter - it will die. Gladiolus or tulip bulbs, accidentally forgotten in the soil, can withstand sub-zero temperatures. But you can’t experiment with dahlia.

Secondly, let’s find out when to dig up dahlias for the winter? Since it loves warmth, the answer is simple. Before the onset of severe frosts. We live in different climatic conditions, so the timing may vary - plus or minus two weeks. In the old days, the Orthodox believed that anything growing in the ground should be removed before September 26th. "Holy Cornelius - out of the ground with rhizomes." It was believed that after the twenty-sixth, roots do not grow in the ground, but freeze.

Whether dahlias or other plants, good owners dug them up for the winter until this day. The first cold hit the bushes, we saw drooping stems and withered heads - the time has come!

How to dig

Taking a shovel and turning out a root with a lump of earth is not for good specialists.

It would be simple at first, the storage conditions for dahlias would not be violated later, they would not disappear by the spring season. The correct thing to do is:

  • cut off long stems, leaving flower stalks 15-20 cm from the soil surface;
  • remove the peg to which the flower was tied;
  • dig up the bush from all sides;
  • We help ourselves with a shovel, and with our hands we carefully pull the contents out of the hole;
  • we clear the soil from the outside and inside (do not use sharp tools);
  • cut off the now unnecessary remains of the stem.

On a note! In mature flowers, the pipes are thick, with a wide entrance hole. It is advisable to dig them up in dry weather so that the dahlia trunks do not rot during storage in winter.

Dahlia annual. Growing from seeds and more :)

I have had these dahlias in my garden for a long time. I buy different varieties. I don't really like the mixture of coloring pages. It is not known what will happen and it is not known where to plant it with what flowers next to it. Here are my dahlias. Not all of them, of course, and the photos are of the first flowers. Usually there are 10 of them on a bush. But they do not bloom all at once, but gradually. Most often there are three flowers.

What kind of flowers are these?

DESCRIPTION

Dahlias are one of the most famous, beautiful, long-flowering plants, beloved by gardeners, with a diverse palette of colors and a variety of inflorescence shapes. Their luxurious large flowers can decorate any corner of the garden, be it a small flower garden near a country house or a luxurious flower garden near a rich cottage. There is probably no gardener who has not grown this wonderful flower at least once. After all, one of the main advantages of dahlias is their flowering from July until frost, abundant and continuous.

Annual dahlias also vary in height - from very low, up to 30 cm in height, to large plants as tall as a man. Low-growing potted varieties of dahlias are very popular now. They bloom faster than others - approximately one and a half to two months after planting, bloom much more profusely and do not require garter. In general, dahlias have this peculiarity - the taller the plant, the later it blooms.

GROWING FROM SEEDS.

The later we sow dahlias, the later we will receive flowers. When working with seedlings, seeds can be sown earlier. And plant already grown seedlings in open ground.

  • Sowing seedlings can be done at different times, from early March to early April. To get tubers of the variety you like, you need to sow earlier. By the end of flowering, the plant will produce a small but strong tuber.
  • We fill the container or box with planting mixture. Dahlias really like a mixture of peat, sand and perlite. If our container is made of wood, then it does not need drainage holes. We make sure to make holes in plastic boxes.
  • Dahlia seeds can be soaked overnight in warm water (two parts) with aloe juice (one part). You don't have to soak it. This is not important.
  • Sow the seeds in the nutrient mixture. Sprinkle a little on top.
  • Cover the container with a plastic bag or glass. Place in a bright place, warm.
  • In just a few days, shoots appear. The shelter can be removed, but this must be done gradually. It is important to keep young dahlias in a bright place.
  • When the seedlings grow, we dive them into separate containers. Dahlias need space. Otherwise they will stretch out. When replanting, we deepen the plants to the first leaves. The soil for picking must be nutritious. We add at least half (of the total amount) of turf soil to the sand and peat.
  • When the dahlias take root, we add fertilizer. Any complex fertilizer in half dose.
  • The seedlings grow very quickly. After a while (look at your plant), we pinch over the fourth pair of leaves.

Landing place. Landing on the street. Care.

Two weeks before planting dahlias in open ground, the seedlings need to be hardened off. On sunny days we start taking it outside. On the first day - for five minutes. In the second - by ten. And so on. We gradually increase the time spent in the fresh air.

  • If the seedlings are in plastic, clay, or glass containers, then the seedlings need to be watered well two hours before planting. Paper and peat cups can be buried in the ground along with the seedlings.
  • In the flowerbed, choose a sunny place, protected from gusts of cold wind. Starting in the fall, you need to plan a place for planting dahlias. Manure, mineral fertilizers, and a little lime are added to the soil for the winter (if the soil is sour). Everything is dug up thoroughly and divided into ridges. In the spring there will be a place ready for planting dahlias.
  • We make holes according to the pattern we have planned. It is important to leave enough space between dahlia bushes. If tall varieties are selected, then the distance between them should not be less than seventy centimeters. For medium flowers - at least fifty centimeters. For low-growing dahlias, it is enough to leave twenty to thirty centimeters.
  • Add a little compost and ash to each hole. Mix the applied fertilizer with the soil. And we plant seedlings. If they are very elongated, then we bury them up to the first cotyledon leaves.
  • We water the seedlings. We mulch the soil around them.

Tasha_jardinier WRITES ABOUT HOW TO PRESERVE AN ANNUAL Dahlia FOR FLOWERING NEXT YEAR

Read it and don't be lazy. By the way, I also have dahlia tubers on my loggia. I'll try to plant them this year. Annual dahlias have exactly the same tubers as perennial ones. The difference is in size and, how can I put it... plumpness. They're not as juicy. That is why, personally, I will be unsoldering them and adding them this month. Skinny :) I'm afraid to be late.

Dahlias - growing from seeds

Proper care of annual dahlia

How to prepare tubers for storage

Before preparing dahlias for storage, we process the root tubers:

  • rinse under running water to remove dirt;
  • remove small plant debris;
  • spray with a strong solution of potassium permanganate from a spray bottle;
  • We dry it anywhere, most importantly under a canopy, for two weeks.

Attention! When processing dahlias for the winter, save the neck. It is not possible to propagate them with a piece of root. The trick is to have a root collar, from which the buds will later emerge and give rise to a new plant.

Is there a difference in perennial and annual tubers? Yes. The first ones have an old tuber that was left over from last year. Quite often it rots in winter when dahlias are stored.

We examine the roots more carefully in the first year of life: they seem normal in appearance, but with dark pulp, hollow. Tap on them and a characteristic dull sound will be heard. Down with them!

Sometimes, in order to remove them, you will somehow have to divide the dahlia tubers: make several from one. If you can’t get inside to get the old junk, cut it boldly and store the renewed dahlia tubers for storage.

How to save an annual dahlia for next year? Or how to propagate an annual dahlia?

If I'm not mistaken, this is "Coloretta Dandy". https://www.ncsemena.ru/shop/element130-4334.html Finding seeds is not a problem (NK-Russian Garden) You can also buy many wonderful dahlias there. https://www.ncsemena.ru/catalog/ Essentially, the dahlia is originally a perennial plant. So planting material grown from seeds must be stored in the same way as plants grown from tubers. Yes, many dry out, but if a living bud remains, consider that you will get excellent planting material. It all depends on how the plants have matured and in what conditions they will be stored. Of all the plants grown from seeds, I saved a little less than half this winter. They were lying in the hallway in a plastic bag (well, there are no other conditions. I’ve already dropped them off and I hope I’ll admire them all summer. PS. Remove the spaces in the links

Or maybe try planting the cuttings in a pot and planting them in the ground in the spring.

Elena Krasheninnikova

Try replanting it indoors for the winter, but it will be very tricky. It's easier to grow a new one from seeds.

An interesting variety, I didn’t immediately recognize that it was a dahlia (it’s more common to see dahlias in another category. The tubers can be preserved if there are conditions for storage, and other things can be done by cuttings (dahlias are easily cut in the spring and closer to autumn. Only during the winter without additional lighting the appearance will be a little unmarketable - you’ll have to draw the cuttings again (that’s how it happened for me -

Methods and conditions for storing dahlias in winter

How to preserve dahlias in winter if their nodules are poorly preserved, have not grown over the summer, and it is a pity to throw away the variety. Wrap them in 3-4 layers of paper, put them in a bag, BUT first, quickly dip them in:

  1. Clay mash: water with clay (like sour cream).
  2. Or technical paraffin: melt in a saucepan with water, do not bring to a boil.

Of course, we won’t process large giants this way: they won’t fit into the pan. This processing method will allow you to store small dahlia roots in an apartment, for example on an insulated balcony. Not everyone has a suitable cool room in their garden.

Interesting on the topic: How to store gladioli at home in winter - digging, processing, preparing bulbs for storage

In the spring, when planting, we do not remove the paraffin, we plant it like this. And we carefully free the roots from the clay - not a complicated process. We have processed it and then choose how to store dahlias in winter. Or rather, we decide where we put it away and how we pack it. Let's discuss several well-known and not so well-known methods.

Did you know? There is an opinion on how not to store dahlia tubers in winter: in cellophane. If you don't tie it, then you can. Moreover, this will prevent the evaporation of excess moisture from them.

In my head…..Sawdust?

How to store dahlia tubers there, in sawdust? Owners of more than a dozen varieties have no time to worry about each one. They need a fast, technologically advanced way. And there is one. Invented by breeder O.A. Daraganov.

No washing, trimming, processing is considered anymore - there is no time.

  • Take a box with holes, line it with film, and cover it with wet sawdust.
  • Treat them in advance: 1 tbsp. copper sulfate + 1.5 liters of boiling water.
  • The amount of this solution is enough to process two buckets of sawdust.
  • The color of the sawdust will change from yellow to bluish. Don't be alarmed, this is how it should be.

We scatter them along the bottom in a layer of 4-5 cm. We lay the roots of the dahlias with the base up, cover them with a second layer and store them in the cellar or basement.

Humidity. What do the cones have to do with it?

Important! We put it in storage. And again the question arises of how to preserve dahlias until spring. The temperature should be cold - five to ten degrees Celsius. And the humidity is high: 65-75%.

How to determine this?

  • You come to the storage place, and it’s dry there. Badly!
  • Or mold. Even worse!
  • What to do? Buying a hygrometer, thermohygrometer is expensive.
  • Take a dry thermometer, wrap a cloth, moisten it with some water, take measurements after 10 minutes, make a table and calculate - basically Chinese literacy!

Let's remember the biology course from the school curriculum - we'll stock up on ordinary forest cones. They will be our controllers.

Let's put one in the water, after a short time we will make sure that the lump is completely closed. This indicates 95-100% humidity for a forest guest. Fully opened, it says about 30-40%. If we see half-opened plates at an angle of 15-25°, this is the golden mean.

Attention! In winter storage areas of dahlia tubers, watch for the opening of scales on the cones. Take the right measures - correct the situation.

Wallpaper glue! It's a joke?

Many people complain that when storing dahlias at home, in warm temperatures and dry air, the roots shrink, dry out and then do not germinate. On the other hand, in an overly damp room, the bulbs become moldy. It's also unpleasant. They require extra care and fungicidal treatments. If everything is organized correctly, then you can keep dahlias healthy and viable at home.

There is a 100% way to avoid unnecessary fuss.

  • Let's prepare a solution of crushed marigolds (half a bucket) and nine liters of boiling water.
  • Once it cools down, it turns dark brown, mix it with standard wallpaper glue with antifungal additives.
  • It should have the consistency of jelly.
  • The finished decoction will protect the onions from all diseases and microbes, and protect them from drying out.
  • A pack of 200 grams is enough for a full bucket of composition.
  • We bathe our preparations in a basin with a healing infusion and put them on a newspaper to dry.

After drying, put it in a suitable container and put it away.

Important! When choosing this method, avoid pre-drying. We dig it up → wash it → process it → store it.

In sand

The most widely known and popular in the world of summer residents. Let’s say right away that you will have to fork out money to buy sand.

  • We take a pouring basin, a large enamel pan, at least twenty liters.
  • Sprinkle dry sand → flowers on top in one or two layers → pieces of burlap.
  • The advantage of this method is the ability to easily see the “health status” of plants.
  • The downside is the risk of early awakening of the kidneys, because sand absorbs moisture strongly.

Starting from March, monitor the condition of dahlias more often. This is inconvenient for apartment residents; you don’t come to the dacha every week.

We don't do anything

How to store dahlias in the garage in winter?

This is a very suitable place in terms of temperature and humidity. Pre-processed roots are placed in boxes and boxes and removed.

But there are craftsmen who do not think about how to store dahlias in winter, and do nothing at all with the roots after digging them up. They just take them with clods of earth, put them in a potato bag and THAT'S ALL! Just like that, unprocessed and put away for storage. .

All processing manipulations begin in the spring, before planting. A completely barbaric method.

Attention! There is a big risk of not keeping the planting material healthy. And in general, it may not last at all - it will rot from fungus. Because, under a lump of soil, old or infected tubers are not visible.

And the most unpleasant thing is the heaviness of the “structure”. Try lifting a bag filled with a mixture of soil and roots! In this case, rough male hands are needed. Enormous force to lift, lower. A woman can't cope. And transport to transport it all from point A to point B. Nevertheless, such a method exists: it is shared among the unfortunate summer residents.

When putting it away in the garage, don’t be lazy and process the tubers as they should be.

Dahlias from seeds

Dahlias are perennial plants, beautiful, noble and grateful. There are many varieties that differ in the shape and size of the inflorescences, the height and thickness of the bush. Dahlias are propagated mainly by tubers, which they form during the growing season. These flowers are also propagated by cuttings and by sowing seeds. The latter method is typical for non-double varieties that have one row of petals per flower. This is how annual plants are usually grown.

Back to top Modern varieties of annual dahlias can be either short (up to 20 cm) or relatively tall (about 60 cm) and offer a huge selection of shades and bud sizes. Popular varieties are Merry Guys (as any annual dahlias are often called), Mary, Dandy, Figaro.

Dahlias are quite patient with the vagaries of the weather. They are drought-resistant and often suffer from excess moisture. For these beautiful flowers, it is better to choose sunny places on slopes and hills.

Annual dahlias are not picky about soil. They feel best on neutral ground.

Planting annual dahlias

For seedlings, seeds of annual dahlias are planted in prepared soil in mid-April. In warm conditions (above 25 degrees) they germinate in 5-10 days. After another 15-20 days you can start picking.

At the end of May, after all the night frosts have passed, you can plant the seedlings in a permanent place. To ensure normal conditions, the distance between plants should be at least 30-40 cm. Unthickened plantings develop better.

It is possible to plant annual dahlias directly in the ground. This is done after all the spring frosts, usually at the end of May or early June. The seedlings are thinned out.

In order for dahlias to bloom more abundantly and longer, it is recommended to remove faded heads without waiting for the seeds to ripen.

Is it possible to save annual dahlias?

During the growing season, annual dahlias manage to form small tubers. If certain conditions are met, they can be saved.

After the plants have flowered, the root system is carefully dug up in a solid lump, dried and placed in plastic bags with holes for aeration, paper bags or in boxes with dry sand.

To preserve annual dahlias , during the winter months they are lowered into a basement or other cool room with relatively low humidity. Increased moisture in the air can lead to rotting of tubers. Too dry air will dry out the roots. But even in this case, some of the plants can be saved if the buds remain viable.

Is it possible to save the seeds of annual dahlias?

Return to top Stores often offer seeds of annual dahlias - hybrids. This means that the plants of the next generation will most likely no longer have the properties that their “parents” had. However, given that these flowers can cross-pollinate, planting annual dahlias from collected seeds can produce flowers that are as beautiful as, or even superior to, the original. Therefore, amateur flower growers can be recommended to stock up on their own collected seeds.

How to store dahlias in an apartment in winter? Wrap it in film!

If you choose to treat dahlias before storing them for the winter, then cling film from the store will be suitable for home use. Can't be? Maybe!

That's exactly what it is. Incredible - it allows the corms to breathe. They do not rot, do not rot, and do not dry out. First we process it, separate it by type → wrap it → sign it with a marker (very convenient) → put it in a box and look for a cool place in the apartment.

Question for those who sowed ANNUAL Dahlia)??

Brunette

I sowed seedlings at the end of March, but maybe if I sow them now they will bloom, but closer to September. As for the seeds, if they are not hybrids and they have time to ripen, they can be collected. And if you want, you can dig up the tubers in the fall, save them and plant them in the spring.

▄▀▄▀ †Crypt Biker † ▄▀▄▀

immediately into this soil as soon as it gets warmer under the film, there will be seeds in the fall. Why do you need an annual one, bother with it, you can plant a perennial one, there are 1500 types of varieties.

Elena Mango

I sow annual dahlias every year. It can be either cactus-like or pompom-shaped, no different from tall, perennial ones. I plant seedlings because they cannot withstand frost. The seeds have time to ripen. Collect.

BERGENIA

It’s good to sow in a greenhouse, then plant. The seeds will ripen. Mine have already sprouted. If they go straight into the ground they will bloom late.

Valery Azachem

Why seeds? I leave the tubers for the winter - as with perennials - and everything is in order (only the tubers of the annual tubers are smaller, and therefore dry out more quickly). But it’s quite enough for growth. In addition, I update the variety almost every year through the purchase of seeds.

Valentina Pushenko

And not only that, you can dig up the roots in the fall. Store in the basement or at home under the balcony door. Good luck.

Hedgehog

I also saved the tubers

LOCO-Richie

The seeds are placed directly into the ground, it blooms all autumn until frost, and the seeds can be collected.

Tatiana Afonina

I often sow annual dahlias. I love varieties with so-called “collars” like Dandy. Yes, and there are plenty of others now. But regarding the safety of the tubers, I’ll say this - I planted annuals, they bloomed beautifully and threw them out in the fall and my soul doesn’t hurt, but how will those tubers survive the winter?? ? In the spring I bought what I liked again and the process was repeated. Of course, I don’t even argue that the tuberous ones are more beautiful and luxurious than the seeded ones, but when there was a collection of 80 varieties and one winter everything was lost in the cellar in the garage, I drew conclusions in the direction of the seeded dahlias.

Athena

I dug up the tubers of annual dahlias and saved them. Now I’m germinating them for planting in the forest

Galina Tsikalova

....aaand ...be sure to do exactly as Brunette writes - COLLECT THE SEEDS...

Alice @lise

very grateful flower. I planted it as seedlings back in March and a bunch of other things (petunias, asters, zinnias, carnations, purslane...), only dahlias make me happy!! ! I have already decided for next year - only this year. And there are such beautiful varieties!!!!

Tatyana Vasilievna

I buy the seeds I like and grow them through seedlings.

Kitty

And I sow (North Moscow Region) in a greenhouse, for seedlings. In the fall I don’t collect or store anything - I’ve already played enough with digging and storing.

Olga

You can go straight into the ground
