Description of strawberry variety Sudarushka, cultivation and propagation

Description of the variety

The strawberry variety Sudarushka was bred by breeders of the St. Petersburg fruit and vegetable station. The plant turned out to be tenacious, productive, and large-fruited.

Bushes

Sudarushka bushes are semi-spreading, with large beautiful leaves. There are a lot of whiskers and rosettes, which on the one hand is good, because... It’s easy to expand the plantation, but on the other hand, it’s bad because you have to constantly monitor your mustache and trim it in a timely manner. The flower stalks do not rise above the leaf cap, so birds will not peck the berries, and foliage is the best protector against sunburn. The inflorescences are medium in size.

Berries

The bulk of the Sudarushka harvest consists of large fruits weighing 25-35 g. The berries are oval, pointed towards the tip. The achenes are embedded in a red skin. The flesh is pink, the structure is juicy, without looseness even in the largest specimens. The taste is harmonious, sweet, with a small amount of sourness. Sudarushka has a rich aroma of wild strawberries.

Productivity

In terms of yield, the variety produces a good result: 72.5 c/ha. It is possible to extend the period of fruiting and increase this figure if the plantation is covered with film.

Sudarushka fruits are universally used. The variety is good fresh, freezing is allowed. Strawberries of this variety make wonderful jam.

Cleaning and storage

The bushes will bear fruit within 3-4 weeks. It is recommended to collect berries from them together with the stalk - this significantly increases the shelf life of the fruit. If stored in a cool, dry place, they can last up to 2 weeks without damage. This berry can be considered universal in purpose. It is suitable for fresh consumption, but is also suitable for any type of canning, as well as freezing.

Description of the plant:

a brief description of

Reviews from gardeners about the variety are good, which is due to the excellent adaptation of Sudarushka to the climatic conditions of our regions. There are many more advantages than disadvantages.

Advantages of the variety

  • large berries;
  • harmonious taste and rich strawberry aroma;
  • the variety is transportable and can be stored for a long time;
  • high resistance to most diseases;
  • good frost resistance;
  • survives in spartan conditions (drought, rainfall, sharp drop in temperature, heat);
  • stable high yield.

Disadvantages of the variety

  • low resistance to berry pests;
  • strong bevel formation.

Diseases and pests

Sudarushka has good resistance to most fungal diseases, however, preventive treatment should be carried out with solutions that can resist the appearance of rot. Seedlings are sprayed with Bordeaux mixture or another product containing copper.

Strawberry Sudarushka is susceptible to damage by some pests. This:

Insecticide preparations (Iskra, Akarin) will help you cope with these insects. Strawberries need to be processed twice throughout the entire season: the first time before flowering, the second time after harvesting.

Landing

The optimal planting time is spring, after the soil warms up or the end of July. July plantings, just like spring ones, will have time to develop before winter and will bear fruit well the next season. Seedlings purchased with a closed root system can be planted all year round, initially shaded from direct sunlight.

Sudarushka loves open, light areas and fertile black soil. Poor soil is enriched in advance with manure or compost (a bucket of rotted manure or compost + 200-250 g of ash per 1 m2).

The optimal acidity level for strawberries is pH: 5.2-5.5. Acidic soils are deoxidized with lime or dolomite flour a year or two before planting. Dolomite flour is a more preferable option, because... additionally enriches the soil with magnesium.

One of the ways to place bushes is suitable for Sudarushka:

  • Carpet, when the plant's tendrils are not cut off and the area is allowed to overgrow. A natural layer of mulch is created; there is no need to loosen the soil, but the berries will be small.
  • In ribbons, placing the strawberries at a distance of 25-30 cm from each other in the row. At least 0.5 m is left between the rows. With this method, you need to tear off the mustache and loosen the soil. For uniform lighting, the strips are placed from north to south.
  • The bush method provides a 40x40 cm pattern.
  • Sometimes gardeners prefer the nesting method: 5 plants in a circle, one in the center. Saves space and makes maintenance easier.

When planting strawberries, you need to ensure that the root collar rises slightly above the ground. In the first 10 days, daily watering is required. In hot weather - twice a day.

Spring crop care

In spring, the strawberry variety Sudarushka requires a new investment of labor. After the snow melts, bare roots and frozen leaves will reappear in the garden bed.

Cleaning bushes and beds

After the soil has thawed, the dry foliage on the strawberry bushes of the Sudarushka variety is cut off. The mulch is removed from the garden bed along with a 3 cm layer of soil. Since autumn, many pests have accumulated there for the winter. The soil around the Sudarushki bushes is loosened with a hoe to a depth of 7 cm, putting the bed in order.

Pest Control

After cleaning the beds, preventive measures are taken against pests and diseases. Before the flowers appear at an air temperature of +10°C, Sudarushka strawberries are treated with weevil preparations: “Akarin”, “Iskra-bio” and others. Plants are sprayed against fungus with fungicides or preparations containing copper, for example, a solution of Bordeaux mixture.

Feeding bushes

In spring, strawberries of the Sudarushka variety need nitrogen fertilizing. Use a solution of chicken manure or scatter 45 g of saltpeter per 1 m2 of bed. With each watering, beneficial substances will be absorbed and absorbed by the roots.

Before flowering, Sudarushka is fed with potassium fertilizer. 35 g of granules are scattered per 1 m2. The fertilizer will dissolve and be absorbed into the soil with each watering.

Mulching the beds

After applying all the fertilizing, all that remains is to cover the bed with mulch and wait for the harvest to ripen. The ground is covered with a thin layer of sawdust, chopped straw, and peat. Spruce needles show good results. Picking berries among thorns is not very pleasant, but such mulch prevents rodents and other strawberry pests from frequenting the beds.

Protecting plants from spring frosts

In cold regions, May and early June are accompanied by night frosts. Light frost is not dangerous for the foliage, but the fruit buds of Sudarushka instantly freeze. To protect strawberry plantations, gardeners use three methods:

  • Frosts begin in the morning. Before this time, you need to moisten the soil. No later than 5 o’clock in the morning, the strawberry bed is watered with water at a temperature of about +23°C. Humidification lasts until the sun rises and the temperature rises above zero.
  • If it is impossible to water the strawberries, they can be saved with smoke. Heaps of organic matter are placed near the beds. It should be a little damp so that when ignited there is smoke and not fire. You can use garden smoke bombs. Smoke in the area with strawberries begins at three o'clock in the morning.
  • The traditional protection against frost is shelter. Arches are placed in the strawberry bed and film or agrofibre is stretched overnight. As the sun rises and the temperature rises, the shelter is removed.

The fight against frost continues until a stable warm night temperature is established.

Growing and care

If you plant Sudarushka strawberries in a fertile area illuminated by the sun, care will be standard and the yield will be high.

Watering

Frequency of watering during the flowering period in the absence of precipitation: twice a week, then once every seven days. Overwatering has a bad effect on the condition of the root system. However, with prolonged drought, there will be fewer ovaries, the fruits will become dry and tasteless. If the region is rainy, the beds are raised above the paths by 5-10 cm.

It is preferable to organize drip irrigation. Covering the beds with black spunbond helps retain moisture. Black material is spread at the stage of planting, cutting out holes for seedlings.

Loosening, weed control

Weeds are the main enemy of strawberry bushes. They do not allow them to develop normally, shade them and reduce their overall resistance to disease. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the destruction of weeds at the stage of planting, by selecting the roots of perennials.

Gardeners have noticed that Sudarushka prefers mulching with straw to loosening. Mulch allows air to pass through well and prevents the fruits from becoming dirty.

Removing a mustache

Numerous whiskers are promptly removed, unless the carpet planting method is chosen. This must be done as early as possible, without tearing it out, but cutting off the tendrils with pruning shears or a knife, so as not to injure the plant. When breeding is planned, mustaches are left on the most productive bushes.

Top dressing

In early spring, Sudarushka needs nitrogen fertilizers. 1 liter is poured onto one bush. solution of chicken manure (1:20) or cow manure (1:10). Organics can be replaced with saltpeter. 45 g of fertilizer are scattered per square meter.

Before flowering, Sudarushka is fed with potassium fertilizer. This can be done with an aqueous solution on the leaf or by scattering mineral fertilizer under the bushes. 35 g of fertilizer are needed per square meter of berry garden.

After harvesting the fruits, the plant is fed with complex fertilizers for berry crops in the proportions specified in the instructions for the preparation.

Pest and disease control

Before flowering, Sudarushka is treated with the biologically active contact-intestinal preparation Akarin, which will protect against insects. This is a powerful drug; you must strictly adhere to the proportions recommended by the manufacturer. Against fungal diseases, they are sprayed with copper-containing solutions, for example, 1-2% Bordeaux mixture.

In the fall, it is necessary to treat the plantation against strawberry mites with the biological product Fitoverm.

If you make sure that the beds are not overgrown with weeds and do not become waterlogged, you can avoid fungal diseases and do not treat the bushes with chemicals.

Marigolds, garlic, onions, and dill are planted next to the strawberry plantings. They will become a natural barrier to pests.

Preparing for winter

In regions with cold and snowless winters, Sudarushka is covered. The plants are inspected and soil is added if necessary. Weak and old bushes that are more than four years old are removed.

A thick layer of straw, spruce branches, and thick agrofibre on low arches help well against hypothermia of the roots. In the southern regions there is no need to cover Sudarushka.

Cultivation care

Caring for strawberries is a very important point on which the final result depends.

Feeding

If the soil on which strawberries grow is black soil, then the bushes will require minimal feeding. In spring, plants will additionally need fertilizer containing nitrogen. It could be a solution of chicken manure. You can also scatter 40 granules of saltpeter on 1 square meter. Dissolving in water, they penetrate the ground and feed the bushes. Before the first flowers appear, it is necessary to apply fertilizer containing potassium. To do this, 35 granules are scattered over 1 square meter.

Watering

Watering strawberries should be sufficient. In hot weather, watering should be done either in the morning or after sunset to avoid burns on the plant.

Mulching the beds

This procedure will help protect the strawberry roots from drying out and will also prevent the growth of weeds. The cover also regulates evaporation while allowing sufficient oxygen to reach the roots.

This type of garden strawberry tolerates mulching well. Mulch can be:

  1. Peat.
  2. Sawdust.
  3. Straw.

The layer also protects the bushes from damage by rodents.

Cleaning bushes and beds

In the spring, it is necessary to remove dried leaves and shoots from last year's strawberry bushes. You will also have to remove the layer of mulch placed on the beds in the fall. It has already fulfilled its purpose, protecting plants from frost in winter. In addition, during this time a large number of pests and their larvae have accumulated in it, so it is necessary to remove not only the mulch, but also the first 3 cm of soil. Loosening the soil around the bushes is carried out to a depth of 6-7 cm.

Preparing for winter

The strawberry variety Sudarushka tolerates winter well, but to prevent freezing, it is better to prepare the bushes for the onset of cold weather. In autumn they can be covered with a thick layer of sawdust or straw.

Reproduction

In one place, strawberries will grow and bear fruit for 4 years. Then the bed needs to be rejuvenated. The Sudarushka variety reproduces well by means of its mustache. Leave the sockets of the first order. If you place plastic pots with soil under them, replanting can be done during the summer. Rooted rosettes are cut off from the mother bush with sharp pruning shears.

The mustache method of propagation is the fastest and easiest. In one summer, from three copies you can get a whole bed of full-fledged seedlings.

Reproduction is possible by dividing a two or three year old bush. Each part should have a developed root lobe and at least a couple of leaves.

Seeds are propagated as a last resort when you need to get a large number of bushes. But you need to be prepared for the fact that the harvest will only be in a year.

How to extend the fruiting period

Many novice gardeners are wondering about the possible extension of the fruiting period of the Sudarushka variety and, consequently, increasing the yield of berries. The variety bears fruit within a month, but not all farmers are happy with this state of affairs. There are several ways to speed up and extend the fruiting process:

To quickly obtain an early harvest, you can use film coating. The optimal time for such work is the end of March, when there are still remnants of snow on the ground. The Sudarushka variety is simply covered with a thick layer of black film. This technique will speed up the heating of the soil and berries, which will speed up the fruiting process. After young leaves appear on the berry, the black film changes to transparent and is secured with arcs

Moreover, it is important to prevent the film from touching the strawberries. If the moment is missed, burns may appear on the strawberries due to the high temperature of the film.

With this technique, you can speed up the fruiting process by 12-14 days. If, on the contrary, it is necessary to delay the fruiting of a variety, then you can use ordinary straw. The Sudarushka variety is covered with a dense layer, which slows down the process of snow melting. The delay in flowering of the berry occurs no more than 10 days.

To get an early and late strawberry harvest, the planting site is divided into 2 areas. On one ridge, a delay technique is used, and on the other, the ripening process of Sudarushki is, on the contrary, accelerated. In some cases, planting other varieties of strawberries nearby helps to vary the timing of fruiting of Sudarushka.

Gardener's advice. A heated greenhouse will help prolong the fruiting of strawberries, as well as increase the amount of harvest.

Reviews

I have been growing the “Sudarushka” variety for many years. The berries are fragrant and tasty; children used to like them, now their grandchildren liked them. I plan to continue growing this particular variety; I’m not chasing super yields; when you’re retired, stability is more important, and there’s no need to buy anything expensive. I can no longer afford seedlings from nurseries, manure, and covering materials.

Strawberries of the Sudarushka variety do not take the gardener much time to care for. The fruits are large and the yield is good. It needs protection from garden pests, but will reward you with delicious aromatic berries.

Varietal features and characteristics

Thanks to crossing two strong varieties, gardeners have Sudarushka. Its characteristics cannot but rejoice, since most of the indicators are at a high level.

Bush size

The bush is strong, dense, and has a spreading shape. Mustaches are formed moderately. The diameter of the bush is from 20 to 40 centimeters.

Appearance of the leaf plate and tendrils

The mustache is not very long and grows moderately. Their color is light green or green-brown. Sometimes there are pale pink antennae. The leaf plate is in the form of an umbrella, medium-sized. The inside is covered with small fluffy hairs. The leaf color is dark green. The sides of the leaf have rounded teeth.

Flowering and pollination

Unlike other fruit crops, strawberries do not stop growing in the fall, but only with the arrival of winter. As soon as the earth begins to warm up, the plant comes to life. This means that Sudarushka has resumed her growth. 16 days after awakening, the buds gradually open, and after 20 days flowering begins. And this period lasts another 18-20 days.

This period depends on weather conditions and ambient temperature. The flowers are white. Usually there are 5-6 flowers in a brush. Pollinators are insects.

Ripening time and yield

The Sudarushka variety has medium ripening periods. They begin to pick berries in the 20-30s of June. Depending on the area and weather, these dates may not coincide and may be delayed by 2-3 weeks.

In warmer places, strawberries ripen at the end of May.

Ways to prolong fruiting

Sudarushka finishes bearing fruit within a month. Today, there are several ways to extend and accelerate ripening. In order to speed up the process, a film coating is used.

Work is carried out until the snow clears. The plantation or individual bushes are covered with black film. As a result, the temperature will rise and the snow will melt quickly. As soon as foliage appears, the black film is removed and a transparent one is placed in its place. Pull it only over the arcs; the leaves should not touch, otherwise there will be sunburn in that place. This method speeds up the process by 12-13 days.

If ripening needs to be delayed, then another method is used. The plantation is covered with straw. The soil will not warm up quickly, so the deadline will be delayed by 10 days.

Taste qualities of the fruit and its further sale

The fruit is ovoid, round in shape, with numerous seeds. The average weight of the berry is 11 grams. The pulp of the berries is pink, very juicy and dense. There is a pleasant strawberry aroma. Experts rated its taste 4.5 points out of 5 possible. The aftertaste is sweet and sour. Strawberries are good for processing into preserves, jams, juices, compotes, or simply freezing for the winter.

Resistance to negative temperatures and drought

Strawberries of the Sudarushka variety tolerate frost and drought well. It can go without water for a long time, but do not forget about regular watering, because the health of the bush depends on it.

Susceptibility to diseases and parasites

The hybrid is resistant to many diseases, but is susceptible to attack by parasites. Therefore, it is worth carrying out preventive treatments of the plantation annually.

How to prepare a variety for wintering

After the Sudarushka strawberry has recovered, the foliage will help it survive the cold. But strawberries cannot do without human help. Activities include the following steps:

  1. Immediately before frost, weeding the strawberry beds must be completed. It is through loose soil that cold weather can reach the roots and affect the variety, preventing it from growing further.
  2. The strawberry bushes should be inspected again and the bare areas should be sprinkled with additional soil.
  3. If the bush is weak after pruning, it should be removed, since the strawberries can be damaged when weak substances are transferred to each other through the tendrils.
  4. If the foliage freezes, it's not so bad. But the roots should be additionally protected with mulch in the form of straw, sawdust or leaves.
  5. If the winters are too harsh, then the berries can be additionally covered with special agrofibre. Fir branches or film, but transparent, are suitable for such purposes.

These tips will help ensure proper care and planting of this amazing variety of strawberries.

Almost everyone loves large, juicy strawberries. This is a real treat for adults and children. Hundreds of different types of garden strawberries are known; the Sudarushka variety is considered one of the most popular among gardeners.
