Review of heart-shaped tomatoes: the best declaration of love for gardeners
On Valentine's Day, February 14, I want to talk specifically about heart-shaped tomatoes - why are they not garden valentines! The holiday of love should not last only one day - this is a great injustice, so I urge you to include varieties and hybrids of tomatoes with heart-shaped fruits in your list of seeds for the upcoming summer season. Their choice is currently quite extensive and interesting. But I decided to talk only about those varieties and hybrids that were tested by myself or my friends in open ground on the southern coast of Crimea. All of them at our dachas turned out to be resistant to major diseases.

What kind of “hearty tomatoes” do you grow at your dacha? What new varieties are you ready to try on your plot in the new summer season?
Growing tomatoes
“Pink Heart” is traditionally grown through seedlings.
How to prepare seeds?
Seed material must be disinfected using a manganese solution.
Sowing seed material
Description:
- Seedlings are sown in early March;
- It is recommended to lightly compact the soil before sowing;
- Seeds are sown on the surface of the soil at intervals of 2 cm. Sprinkle chernozem and peat on top with a layer of 1 cm;
- After watering with warm water, cover with a film cover. The containers are placed in a room with a temperature of at least +25 degrees;
- After emergence of seedlings, the film cover is removed. The seedlings are placed in bright light. During the week the temperature should be +15…+16 degrees. Afterwards they are maintained at +20…+25 degrees;
- Picking begins after the formation of two true leaves;
- Throughout their growth, seedlings are provided with regular watering, stable temperature, sufficient lighting, and fed twice.
Rules for planting seedlings
Description:
- Seedlings are planted in a permanent place at the age of 60-65 days. Seedlings should have 6-7 full leaves and one flower cluster;
- It is better to grow tomatoes in fertile, light soil enriched with nutrients;
- During transplantation, adhere to the recommended scheme: no more than 3 bushes per 1 m2;
Immediately after planting, stakes are installed or seedlings are tied to trellises in the greenhouse structure.
Features of cultivation and storage
When transporting tomatoes, they have to be wrapped in wrapping paper, since any shock leads to dents appearing on their sides. Injured tomatoes quickly deteriorate; their shelf life is only one or two days. Fruits picked at technical ripeness are ripened at room temperature for three to four days, and then can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week.
The variety is grown only through seedlings.
Tomato can be cultivated in open ground and under temporary film covers. The age of seedlings at the time of transplantation is 55-60 days. The plants are grown in two stems, carefully pinched and secured in an upright position.
Bush care
Basic care recommendations:
- Carry out moderate but regular watering at the root using warm water;
- Weeds are destroyed in a timely manner;
- The formation of a bush is carried out in 2-3 stems, removing all excess stepsons;
- To prevent branches from breaking off, the bushes are equipped with supports to which they are tied as they grow;
- The first feeding is carried out two weeks after transplantation with superphosphate and potassium chloride. The second - during the formation of ovaries, with a liquid composition of superphosphate and potassium nitrate. The third and fourth - during the fruiting period, using a similar composition as for the second feeding;
- The soil must be mulched with bark, hay, mown dried grass, and sawdust;
- For preventive purposes, bushes are sprayed with special preparations to protect tomato seedlings from insect pests and various diseases.
Advantages and disadvantages
Let's take a detailed look at the advantages and disadvantages of the Pink Heart tomato from the description of the variety.
This variety has a medium-early ripening period, which is 110 days or more from seed germination, but, according to reviews from gardeners who grow “pink heart”, the harvest appears on 120–135 days.
Correctly calculate the time for sowing seeds. This is done like this: from the day of planting (May 10–15) the seedlings in the greenhouse, we subtract 60–65 days (the age of the seedlings), and we get the first days of March. We take another 5 days for seed germination, so it turns out that we sow on February 25th.
The yield of this variety is low, so farmers do not favor it and it is almost impossible to buy it on the market. The “Pink Heart” tomato is grown by true lovers of taste and appearance. The variety is quite young, but those who have tried it claim that they get a maximum of 10 kg per square meter, but for this you need to try hard.
And another reason why professionals do not like this variety is that “pink heart” deteriorates during transportation, as it has a delicate thin skin. And, of course, these tomatoes cannot be stored for a long time.
Tomatoes are tasty, the flesh is sugary and meaty, and excellent fresh. A salad made from such fruits does not produce juice; the skin is soft and invisible, which is undoubtedly a big plus. For those who have high stomach acidity, this variety is irreplaceable.
Tomatoes are suitable for making sauces and seasonings; they can be prepared in salads.
To get a harvest, you need to form a bush.
Tall bushes form one or two stems. The easiest thing is one stem: remove all the stepsons. This method will allow you to plant plants more often. You can use the “containment method”: leave the stepson above the first inflorescence, wait until it forms two flower clusters and pinch it off. Others should be deleted. What does this give?
- The growth of the bush will be restrained;
- The yield will increase by 30%, since the largest fruits are formed on the lower clusters.
Recommended cultivation in two trunks: pros and cons? For tall varieties, it is advised to leave one stepson and grow it as the main stem.
Pros:
- Restraining upward growth
- Increase in yield,
- Fewer seedlings needed.
Minuses:
- Greater distance between bushes.
- The load on the bush increases, requiring additional feeding.
- The fruits will eventually be born smaller.
Is it worth recklessly chasing an imaginary harvest? Conclusion: better than one, but strong trunk.
Pros of the Pink Heart variety:
- Excellent taste and appearance are the main advantage;
- Disease resistance;
- Harmonious ripening of the crop;
- High fruit set.
Minuses:
- Cannot be stored;
- Deteriorates during transportation.
And what should be considered the main disadvantage of the “Pink Heart” tomato according to reviews and photos? Productivity!
It is low for such care, so you should not give this variety priority in the greenhouse; you can grow it for your soul and assortment.
Diseases and pests
The tomato variety “Pink Heart” has good resistance to fungal diseases. However, one should not neglect preventive measures: observe the correct cultivation conditions, watering regime, lighting and air circulation when growing crops in greenhouse conditions. Tomatoes are most often susceptible to brown fruit rot. It is necessary to immediately remove affected plants and reduce the amount of nitrogen fertilizer applied. To consolidate the achieved result, the drug “Hom” is used.
Common insect pests:
- Melon aphid. To combat it, gardeners successfully use the drug “Bison”;
- Garden owl. Its occurrence can be prevented by timely destruction of weeds. The drug “Zubr” is also used;
- Cutworm gnawing. It is effectively combated with the help of the drug “Strela”;
- Slugs are the most frequent guests in the middle zone. As a preventative measure, remove all excess tops.
To create a hostile environment, the soil around the plants is isolated.
Nuances of agricultural technology
In March, the seeds are buried in lightly compacted soil, sprinkled with a centimeter layer of peat-soil mixture. After watering the planting with warm water, the container should be moved to a bright place and the temperature should be maintained within +25 ᵒC.
As soon as the first shoots appear, remove the film from the container and place the seedlings in a well-lit place. For the first 7–8 days, the air temperature should not be too high and exceed +15–16 ᵒС, and later it can be increased to 20–22 ᵒС. As soon as 1-2 true leaves appear, you can pick.
Plants are transferred to their permanent place of residence when they reach the age of 60–65 days. Moreover, they should already have 6–7 true leaves and at least one flower cluster.
Judging by the reviews of those who planted, the tomatoes set fruit well and ripen well. They have special requirements for temperature and watering and are very fond of complex fertilizing.
Disease resistance is average - a lot will depend on care. In particular, by creating favorable conditions for lighting, air circulation, watering and loosening, it is possible to increase resistance to late blight, fungal diseases, brown rot, and pests.
If any of them manifest themselves, it is necessary to eliminate all unfavorable factors and, if necessary, apply insecticides, for example, “bison”, “hom”, “arrow”, etc. Excess tops must be removed and the soil must be isolated.
As practice shows, plants are rarely affected by cladosporiosis, TMV, and Alternaria leaf spot. So if you want to take a risk and try something new, go for it. Having experience in growing tomatoes, you will succeed, I am sure of it.
Well, beginners should start with something less capricious. Have a good harvest everyone and don’t forget to tell your friends and acquaintances about what you learned. Good luck!
Productivity
With proper care, 2.5 to 3.0 kg of harvest is harvested from each plant. If the recommended planting density is observed (no more than 2-3 seedlings), up to 9 kg of tomatoes are obtained from 1 m2.
Which regions are best to grow in?
The tomato variety “Pink Heart” shows the best performance when grown in the southern regions. It is recommended to cultivate the variety in the Central regions of the Russian Federation in film shelters. In more northern areas, only heated greenhouse structures are used for cultivation.
Benefits of tomatoes
Tomatoes have thick skin, high sugar content and are resistant to viruses.
Advantages:
- excellent taste;
- high fruit set;
- disease resistance;
- tomatoes do not crack.
Flaws:
- “Pink Heart” tomatoes are heat-loving and in the northern regions they are grown only in greenhouses.
- This large variety produces a small harvest.
- Huge fruits do not fit in a jar, and therefore they are not closed for the winter.
- Vegetables are not stored for a long time; they deteriorate during long transportation.
- Weak branches of plants require a mandatory garter.
- Bushes are capricious to care for.
Reviews about the variety from those who planted
Owners of personal plots speak only positively about the tomato variety “Pink Heart”. They do not need high yields, but only high-quality and tasty tomato fruits. Large farms prefer not to grow this variety due to low yields and poor transportability.
According to the above information, the tomato variety “Pink Heart” is not suitable for beginner gardeners. They should try their hand at a less demanding tomato crop. However, if you have an experienced mentor nearby, you can take a chance and plant a few tomato bushes.
