The apple tree Glory to the Winners, planting and caring for which is not difficult, was bred back in 1928 at the horticultural station named after. Simirenko. In 1975, it was accepted by the State Register, which recommended it for cultivation throughout almost the entire territory of the USSR. The variety quickly gained popularity and love among gardeners for its unpretentiousness, good yield, and amazing taste of the fruit.

History of selection and zoning of the variety

The variety was bred in 1928 at the experimental station of the Mlievsky Research Institute of Forest-Steppe Horticulture of Ukraine named after. L.P. Simirenko by crossing “Mekintosh” and “Papirovka”. In 1948, state variety testing of the plant began. In 1954, “Glory to the Peremozhets” was included in the Ukrainian register of selection achievements, and in 1975 it was officially registered in the State Register of the Russian Federation. In Ukraine, the variety is recommended for cultivation in the natural zones of Polesie, forest-steppe and steppe, in Russia - in three regions: Central Black Earth, North Caucasus and Lower Volga. The variety is zoned for almost all industrial horticulture territories of the former USSR.

A summer ripening variety in the southern regions, and in the central regions of Russia, apples ripen in early autumn

Abundant yield and high winter hardiness, excellent taste and visual attractiveness of the fruit ( marketability 80-90% ) have made this apple tree one of the most beloved and sought-after representatives of the culture.

What type does it belong to?

Glory to the Winners can be attributed to summer or even late summer apple varieties of home selection. The progenitors of this variety are Papirovka and Mackintosh , so the result is very similar to them in many morphological characteristics.

Glory to the Winners is grown everywhere in all horticultural regions of the former USSR.

The fruits of this variety can be stored both in buckets and in wooden boxes - Slava Pobeditelem belongs to the high-lying varieties. The storage room should be clean, dry and dark, the recommended storage temperature is from 5 to 10 degrees Celsius. An underground cellar is also quite suitable for this .

The storage time for apples depends greatly on the growing region. For example, in the south of Russia, fruits can be stored for up to 2 weeks, and in the northern regions of cultivation - up to 3 months (for example, in the Oryol region, the harvest is harvested in September, and can be stored until December).

As for pollination, Glory to the Winners is a self-sterile variety . To do this, pollinators are planted next to it. The most suitable varieties are Melba, Vadimovka, Priam, James Grieve, Delichiya, Antonovka ordinary, Borovinka .

Description of the plant and specifics of cultivation

Trees on seed rootstock are vigorous (more than 4 m in height), fast-growing, with a strong frame. Skeletal branches covered with brown bark extend from the trunk at an acute angle and are raised upward. Over time, they spread out to the sides and become overgrown with ringlets and fruit twigs. The crown is broadly pyramidal, and with age it acquires an oval or rounded shape. Shoot formation is active, so the crown tends to thicken.

In order not to increase the density of the crown, the branches, if possible, are not shortened, but cut out whole, thinning out and ensuring that some of the strong branches become overgrown.

On young trees, the shoots are reddish-brown, shiny, and slightly elbowed. Growing up, they become brown, straight, with small, dense lentils. Kidney arousal is good. The leaves are medium-sized, light green, with a slightly noticeable yellowness, round-oval in shape, with raised edges.

During the flowering period, the apple tree looks very impressive thanks to its red buds and bright pink flowers.

Fruiting is mixed - on spears and ringlets (simple and complex). The early fruiting of an apple tree depends on the rootstock and weather and climatic conditions. For example, in the southern regions, trees on weak-growing vegetative rootstocks begin to bear fruit in the 4th-5th year , in the northern regions - somewhat later. In the first years, fruiting is regular, later there is a periodicity (not sharp). The productivity of the variety is assessed as high or average: according to field tests in the central part of Kuban - 195 c/ha, in the steppe - 110 c/ha. On new dwarf and semi-dwarf rootstocks, early fruiting and yield indicators increase due to more intensive agricultural technology.

Apple tree "Melba" (pictured) is the most widely known pollinator variety for "Glory to the Winners"

It is important to take into account that “Glory to the Winners” is a self-sterile variety , so nearby you need to plant pollinating apple trees of other varieties that bloom at similar times, for example, “Borovinka”, “Vadimovka” or “Melba”.

Caring for the Glory of the Winners

Watering and fertilizing

The variety Slava Pobediteley cannot be called whimsical, but it has certain requirements for soil moisture: the plant does not tolerate both drought and excessive humidity. For the first three years, during the hot season, watering is carried out every week at the rate of at least 30 liters of settled and sun-warmed water per tree.

You cannot water the Glory to the Winners apple tree with cold water.

As for fertilizers, they begin to apply them only from the second season. Along the perimeter of the tree trunk circle, the diameter of which is one and a half times larger than the projection of the crown, you need to make a trench about 50 cm wide and about 40 cm deep. Water should be poured into this trench when watering and nutrient solutions when fertilizing. Phosphorus and potassium are applied for the first time after planting only in the fall of the third year, and in the summer or spring the apple tree is fertilized only with nitrogen and microelements.

Apple tree pruning

From the very first year they begin to shape the crown of the apple tree, without regret removing all shoots and branches that do not fit into the diagram. If the crown of Glory to the Winners is not formed in a timely manner, the apples will be small and the harvests will be poor. The first pruning is done at the beginning of the second season after planting: the top of the conductor is shortened by 10-12 cm, and no more than 7 buds are left on the trunk. It is best to form a crown in the spring, and it will take you 3-4 years to complete the process. In the future, you will only need to maintain shape and do a sanitary cleaning of the crown 1-2 times per season - in spring and autumn. Disease Control

The most dangerous infections for trees of this variety are:

  • fruit rot, or moniliosis;
  • scab;
  • milky shine;
  • infectious drying out, or cytosporosis;
  • powdery mildew.

In case of scab disease, which happens with Glory to the Winners much less often than with other apple trees, treatment consists of treating the tree on the leaves with the fungicidal drug Topaz, the solution of which is prepared in accordance with the instructions. Spraying with Hom, copper sulfate and Bordeaux mixture will help against other diseases. Apple trees are also treated with the same fungicides for preventive purposes, but the concentration of the preventive solution is reduced by 2-3 times compared to the therapeutic solution.

Preparing Glory to the Winners for winter

Preparing a tree for winter is not difficult. After cleaning the crown, that is, after removing diseased, pest-affected, broken and drying shoots directed deep into the crown, you need to remove all plant debris from under the tree, dig up the soil under it and mulch the root area with a thick layer of organic material. To prevent the bark of the Glory to the Winners apple tree from being damaged by rodents, the trunk and the base of the skeletal branches of the lower tier are treated with a solution of lime with the addition of a fungicide. After whitewashing, a meter-high metal mesh frame is installed around the trunk or the lower part of the tree is tied with spruce paws or covering material. These manipulations to protect the apple tree from frost are quite enough for Glory to the Winners to safely survive the winter.

Consumer qualities of fruits

Apples are large (at optimal air humidity and on well-moistened soils) and medium-sized: weighing about 125 g, maximum up to 180 g. The shape is round, oblong-round or slightly narrowed (cone-shaped) in the upper part. The surface is smooth or with barely noticeable ribbing. The skin is smooth, covered with a light waxy coating, with numerous light subcutaneous spots, the centers of which are often suberized.

When fully ripe, apples, covered with a uniform bright red blush, do not hold well on the tree.

When picked, the color of the fruit is light greenish with a continuous blurred red blush over the entire surface. The pulp is white-cream, sometimes with a pink tint, tender, medium-grained, juicy, aromatic, with an excellent sweet and sour taste. Professional tasting scores – 4.2-4.6 points (out of 5). Numerous reviews describe the taste as “amazing”, sweet with a pleasant sourness and honey aroma.

According to the results of biochemical studies conducted by VNIISKP specialists, the fruits of this variety contain:

Nutrients and beneficial substancesQuantity (per 100 g raw product)
Vitamin C (ascorbic acid)8 mg
Total sugars13-14.4 g
Acids0.8 g
P-active substances110 mg

Apples of the “Glory to the Winner” variety are for table use, excellent for fresh consumption and various processing methods.

The timing of ripening and storage directly depends on the climatic characteristics of the region of cultivation: in the Kuban, fruits reach technical ripeness in the first half of August, and in the central regions, for example Oryol, in early September. “Southern” fruits are stored for only 2 weeks, and more “northern” ones - about 1.5 months , but if picked in a timely manner and properly stored, they can last until December. Apples do not tolerate long-term transportation well, since the juicy pulp and delicate skin are quickly damaged. Therefore, the variety is grown mainly for personal use and quick processing.

Reviews from gardeners

Inna, 39 years old, Orel

I inherited two apple trees from the previous owners of the dacha; they are already ten years old. They bloom normally. They never froze, and practically did not suffer from diseases. They are easy to care for and love regular watering. Apples ripen in early September. When the early varieties have already faded away, and the winter ones are still completely green, this variety helps our family a lot. Unfortunately, in dry years, if the moment is missed, they often crumble and become smaller. The yields are decent and are not stored for long. From each tree we remove from 50 to 80 kg. We mainly process it into dried fruits, some of it is eaten fresh and made into jam. The apples are very elegant, large, sweet and sour and aromatic. Thanks to their unique acidity, they are well suited for making fruit mousses and casseroles.

Marina, 36 years old, Krasnodar region

Our apple tree is now eight years old. A two-year-old seedling was purchased from a nursery. It did not take root well, a year after planting it began to hurt, the leaves dried out. We filled it with fertilizers, watered it several times a week, and gradually the situation improved. Three years later, the harvest was small, but the apples were very tasty. Now the tree has a beautiful pyramid-shaped crown, which I regularly thin out. Last summer, after prolonged rains, scab appeared. As a result, half of the harvest was spoiled. Now, without waiting for forecasts, in the fall I remove fallen leaves around the tree and treat them with a solution of ammonium nitrate (10%). At the same time I spray the branches and trunk. Apples ripen in early August. On average, it turns out no more than 40 kg. We try to eat as much as possible fresh. The taste is reminiscent of honeycomb with a subtle sourness, which our children really like.

Oleg, 37 years old, Belgorod region

Glory to the people of Peremozhsk, this is our fifth year. Last season we collected about a dozen apples, and this summer we got a good harvest. The apples are very juicy, with an amazing honey aroma. They are the most delicious - straight from the tree. Summer this year is dry and hot, so you need to be more careful; you may come across overripe fruits with rotten, brown pulp inside. Like many summer varieties, they do not store well even in the refrigerator - a little more than a month. For now we only have time to eat. It’s a shame that many apples fall off spontaneously. Let's see what other surprises this tree will bring. I will watch and wait for good harvests.

Selection of seedlings Glory to the Winners

When planting seedlings of Glory to the Winners, it is advisable to follow the recommendations developed by specialists taking into account the requirements of this variety. In general, the procedure is the same as for other apple trees, but there are several nuances that need to be taken into account. When choosing planting material, give preference to seedlings with a strong root system without dry roots or signs of rotting. The place where the rootstock joins the scion must be dry. Do not buy apple tree seedlings with damaged bark, as well as those that are much higher or lower than 150 cm. The best planting material is healthy annual or biennial trees.

Landing dates

This variety can be planted in the fall, during leaf fall, or in the spring, after the snow melts, but before the buds begin to swell. Before autumn planting, you need to remove all the leaves from the seedling and treat its roots against diseases and pests. It is better to plant a tree on a warm, clear, but not very sunny day.

The technique for preparing a pit and the procedure for planting an apple tree are the same for any season.

Choosing a site and preparing for planting

Glory to the Winners grows best in elevated areas well lit by the sun. 7-10 days before planting, you need to dig a planting pit up to 60 cm in diameter and about 1 m in depth. Calculate the size of the hole so that after planting, the grafting site of the seedling will not be underground. The soil from the upper, fertile layer is mixed with wood ash and humus, mineral fertilizers are added to the mixture and the hole is filled with this mixture to a third of the depth.

How to plant an apple tree

On the day of planting, a peg is driven into the middle of the bottom of the pit of such a height that it protrudes above the surface by at least half a meter. The Glory to the Winners apple tree seedling is placed in the middle of the pit, its roots are carefully straightened, after which the remaining space of the pit is filled with earth. The surface of the tree trunk circle is lightly trampled down and 10 liters of water is poured under the seedling, and when it is absorbed, the root area is mulched with straw, sawdust, peat or other organic matter. Water for irrigation needs to be settled and warm. When the soil settles, the seedling is tied to a support.
