An early variety with record low starch - Arosa potatoes: description and characteristics

Description of the variety

"Arosa" is an early ripening table variety. Its ripening period is only 60-65 days from the moment of emergence. The yield on fertile soil reaches 500 centners per hectare.

Bushes

The stem is an erect type, densely leafy, with an average height of 60-70 cm. A characteristic feature of the variety is the friendly growth of shoots, due to which the plantation acquires a complete and presentable appearance. The leaves are medium-sized, dark green in color with a pronounced anthocyanin tint. The waviness of the edge is weakly expressed. Flowering is abundant, the inflorescences are deep purple.

Tubers

Up to 15 tubers are formed under each bush. They are small in size, but have an excellent presentation thanks to their smooth light pink peel and classic oval shape. The average weight of one potato is 70-140 grams.

Other characteristics of root vegetables:

  • Slight lumpiness;
  • The eyes are superficial, but large;
  • Creamy pulp with an average starch content of about 13%;
  • Good taste, which tasters rate at 4.5 points on a 5-point scale.

REFERENCE : "Arosa" is a universal potato. Its flesh does not turn black when cut and does not soften during heat treatment. Therefore, in cooking it is used for frying in a frying pan, in a deep fryer, and as an ingredient for soups and salads. In the food industry, this variety is processed into chips and French fries.

Advantages and disadvantages

The main valuable qualities of Arosa potatoes:

  • Rapid ripening, thanks to which the variety can be successfully grown even in climate zones with short summers;
  • High yield;
  • Excellent presentation of root crops. Marketability indicator – 94-96%;
  • Universal application;
  • Good keeping quality. If storage conditions are met, at least 95% of potatoes are successfully stored until April.

The main disadvantage of the variety is the small size of the root crops, which increases the time for culinary processing of potatoes and the amount of waste.

Potato:

Harvesting and storage

Experienced gardeners speak well of the Arosa potato variety; it is characterized by long-lasting shelf life. The root crop is dug up at the end of June, after flowering. Young potatoes are already suitable for eating. For storage, the harvesting procedure should be postponed until the end of July. After digging, the tubers are dried, sorted and chopped into boxes with holes for ventilation. For the first two weeks, temperature parameters should be within + 16-17 °C. Afterwards, it is advisable to set the constant indicators at + 2-5 ° C with an air humidity of 80%.

Peculiarities

Characteristic features of this potato:

  • "Arosa" is suitable for any type of soil: loam, peat, soddy-podzolic. The best performance can be achieved on fertilized sandstone;
  • Due to its drought resistance, the variety is in demand in southern regions with hot summers, as well as among summer residents who appear on the plantation only once a week;
  • It responds well to the application of mineral fertilizers to the soil.

Potato plantations of the Arosa variety are distinguished by beautifully formed bushes with erect stems. The shoots are uniform and dense. The leaves are medium and large, dark green in color with smooth, slightly wavy edges.

The inflorescences are dense, red-violet in color. Arosa is recognized as one of the earliest and highest-yielding potato varieties. Growing these potatoes does not require much effort. Activities such as additional watering, hilling, and mulching are not required, but can be beneficial.

With additional fertilizer, the yield increases significantly, but even in the absence of fertilizing, potatoes please with their high quantitative indicators. With minimal effort, you can get the maximum yield of beautiful, tasty and long-lasting potatoes, which are quite suitable for running a business.

Correct fit

Like any early-ripening potato, Arosa requires competent pre-sowing activities, including planning and preparation of the site, as well as pre-planting seed treatment.

Site selection

Well-ventilated areas located on a hill are preferred. The plantation must be illuminated for more than 12 hours a day. The beds should be “stretched” in the north-south direction.

Soil preparation

When plowing the land in autumn, it is advisable to apply organic fertilizers: manure or humus. Before winter, the garden is sown with green manure: alfalfa, clover, phacelia. In the spring, the area is loosened and humus is added if necessary.

To create the best conditions for potatoes, the soil for planting is improved:

  • Peat bog: add compost, humus and sand in a ratio of 2:2:1;
  • Loam: add 10 kg of peat per 1 sq.m of land;
  • Sandstone - add rotted humus.

REFERENCE : The best predecessors for potatoes are carrots, onions, and cabbage. You cannot plant potatoes in one place for more than 3 years in a row.

Seed preparation

Seed material is prepared as follows:

  1. They sort the tubers for planting, leaving only large, healthy and dense potatoes;
  2. About a month before planting, germination begins. To do this, take the box with the seeds out into a lighted room with a temperature of 12-15*C. The optimal length of shoots when planting is 2-3 cm. Longer shoots often break when covered with soil, which threatens a general decrease in germination;
  3. On the eve of planting, the tubers are treated with growth stimulants: Fitosporin-M, Agat 25-K or Cherkaz. Treatment reduces the growing season by 2-3 days and protects plants from soil diseases in the early growth phase. As an economical option, you can use a weak solution of potassium permanganate.

Purchasing seed potatoes:

Planting Density

Recommended planting pattern:

  • Row spacing – 60 cm;
  • The interval between bushes is 35 cm;
  • Planting depth is 8-10 cm.

Fertilizers are added to the planting holes: a handful of ash and a pinch of superphosphate and potassium sulfate. On depleted soils, throw a handful of peat under each potato.

Boarding time

Planting is carried out in the ground, still saturated with spring moisture, but already warmed up to at least 10*C. In southern latitudes, this period begins in late April - early May. In central Russia - on average two weeks later.

Care

The agricultural technology for growing the variety is not complicated. It includes basic agricultural practices.

Watering

"Arosa" requires deep watering (to a depth of 50 cm in the ground) once every 7-10 days. The average liquid consumption for such irrigation is 10-15 liters of water for each bush. When watering you need to follow the rules :

  • Water in the early morning or late evening;
  • Avoid getting water on leaves and stems.

To preserve moisture, the beds are mulched with a thick layer of straw (about 20 cm).

Hilling and loosening

The first hilling is carried out when the shoots grow to 10 cm, the second - during the flowering period. Simultaneously with hilling (and more often if necessary), the soil is loosened and weeds are thoroughly removed.

Feeding

"Arosa" responds very well to the addition of nutrients. Fertilizing is carried out together with hilling. The first time they add diluted litter, the second time they add superphosphate with liquid manure.

The most productive potato varieties:

Plant care consists of the following activities

Watering and loosening

"Arosa" is unpretentious to watering, but the potatoes must be watered generously three times. The first watering is carried out a month after planting the tubers in the soil, the second, during the formation of the first buds, and the third during the setting of the tubers. Plants should be irrigated in the late evening; the soil should be saturated with moisture to a depth of at least 50 centimeters.

Hilling up rows

Hilling is carried out two to three times during the growing season. The procedure is necessary for intensive growth and formation of the root system and, accordingly, the formation of additional tubers under the bush. The first hilling is carried out immediately after planting in order to protect young shoots from possible spring frosts. The second hilling is carried out before budding, the third is carried out during flowering, if the bushes have not yet closed;

Fertilizing plants

During the budding period, you need to add potassium and phosphorus fertilizers. Use liquid fertilizer based on superphosphate and potassium sulfide. To prepare the working solution, you will need to dissolve 15 grams of each fertilizer in 10 liters of water. The consumption per square meter of prepared liquid fertilizer is one liter;

Pest and disease control

"Arosa" is prone to silver scab and rhizoctonia. To combat diseases, treat tubers before planting with Maxim or Titusim.

The potato variety is being attacked by the Colorado potato beetle. Use the preparations “Bikol” and “Kinmiks” for destruction.

Harvesting

Potatoes are harvested 60-75 days after planting, presumably at the end of July, beginning of August. Two weeks before digging up the tubers, the tops need to be mowed. The collected tubers are sorted, discarding diseased and damaged potatoes, and then placed in boxes, nets or containers for further storage. The temperature in the storage room should be within +2-4°C, humidity 60-80%.

Diseases and pests

The variety is highly resistant to the following diseases:

Malignant tumors;

  • Golden nematode;
  • Mosaic;
  • Type Y viruses;
  • Alternaria blight;
  • Fusarium;
  • Verticillium.

If the planting is very dense and there are weeds in the garden bed, the plants may suffer from top blight or leaf curl.

Most often, “Arosa” suffers from such diseases:

  • Rhizoctiniasis. Affected plants are burned, the rest are treated with Maxim, Baktofit, Integral;
  • Silver scab. Pre-planting treatment and proper germination are almost guaranteed to protect the future potato bush from scab.

Characteristics of Arosa potato variety

Growing a lot of potatoes is not an easy task, but if you strictly follow all the rules and regulations, everything will turn out exactly as planned. One of the important aspects of this process will be the correct selection of seeds. Arosa potatoes are very popular and valuable among vegetable growers, initially due to the fact that they produce high yields. In addition to this, the variety is resistant to high summer temperatures and droughts, so it can be grown without additional artificial watering.
