The Sarpo Mira potato is a variety that was bred by a group of Hungarian breeders in 1950. Potatoes stand out for their strong immunity to unfavorable environments. Sarpo Mira is suitable for cultivation in different regions with different soil types. In the ground, the fruits ripen for 95-110 days, so potatoes belong to the mid-late varieties. Sarpo Mira potatoes make delicious fluffy puree, fried, boiled and stewed side dishes.

Characteristics of the variety:

  1. The vigorous bushes of Sarpo Mira have powerful, non-lodging tops;
  2. Characteristics of potatoes: the potato variety reaches 18 cm and grows oblong-oval in shape;
  3. The skin of the root crop is colored red or pinkish and covered with small eyes with a depth of up to 3 mm;
  4. Starchy content: each Sarpo Mira root vegetable contains up to 17% starch.

Description and characteristics of the variety

The Sarpo mira potato is a late-ripening species. The variety was bred by breeders from Hungary in the 50s. The creator is Istvan Satvari. Tests and improvements lasted until the 90s. During this period, the vegetable acquired strong resistance to late blight.

Potatoes are distinguished by strong immunity and resistance to adverse factors. The bushes are vigorous and strong. The tops are powerful and do not lie down. The variety does not require weeding or weed removal. Each potato nest contains 6-11 large vegetables. Keeping quality 94%.

The variety is suitable for different types of soil and climate. This vegetable is recognized as the world standard for resistance to late blight. Up to 90-100 days, the bushes grow in soil infected with fungi and are not affected. Potatoes tolerate low temperatures and excessive humidity. It has average resistance to scab, Alternaria, and viral pathogens.

Full ripening occurs after 95-115 days.

Distinctive properties of tubers:

  • average weight 75-140 g;
  • starchiness 14-17%;
  • skin color is red or pink;
  • the pulp is snow-white, the consistency is dense;
  • eyes are small, depth 3 mm;
  • culinary purpose of SD.

The variety has an optimal starch content; potatoes make fluffy mashed potatoes and excellent stewed, boiled and fried side dishes.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before starting to cultivate the Sarpo Mira variety, vegetable growers recommend familiarizing yourself with the positive and negative characteristics of potatoes.

Advantages

  • Stable yield of the variety: like Temp potatoes, Sarpo Mira allows you to collect up to 370 c per 1 ha;
  • Sarpo Mira potatoes reach large sizes;
  • Strong immunity to late blight of the root system and tops;
  • Excellent external characteristics and taste characteristics;
  • The Sarpo Mira variety is undemanding in care;
  • Potato resistance to low temperatures and drought.

Flaws

The only drawback of cultivating Sarpo Mira potatoes, which vegetable growers highlight, is the need for timely harvesting (if the tubers outgrow, they begin to form voids, resulting in a decrease in marketable quality).

Description of the variety

Characteristics of tubers

The Unika variety is large-fruited. The tubers are oval, not aligned, the skin is raspberry-colored, the flesh is yellow. When cooked, potatoes do not become soft. When boiled it has a specific taste. It seems that it is salted, with sourness, not fresh. There is no need to use spices.

Landing dates

Potatoes are mid-season in terms of ripening. Like all varieties, it is planted in the south in early April, in the middle zone in early May. In the Urals and Siberia in the mid-2nd half of May.

Harvesting time for Unica potatoes

Potato harvesting begins in early October, when the tops are affected by frost. This variety has very powerful stems, 1.1 meters high in the middle zone and 2 meters in the south.

What is the yield of potatoes

The variety is high-yielding. Up to 15 large tubers are collected from one bush. The weight of a potato can reach 0.75-1.5 kg. From one hundred square meters they harvest 320 kg of large potatoes, i.e. 40(!) buckets. Potatoes of other sizes are not taken into account.

Disease resistance

The variety has good immunity to late blight and other crop diseases.

Features of planting

It is recommended to plant Sarpo Mira potatoes after germination. To germinate a potato variety, it must be removed to a warm room 30 days before planting. Afterwards, it is recommended to select the material and treat it with a growth stimulant, for example, Bioglobin or Epin.

Site preparation

It is recommended to prepare the soil for planting in the fall. After collecting the predecessors, the beds should be carefully plowed to a depth of 5 cm or more. The soil is also cleared of weeds and fed with manure. In the spring, before planting, the soil is dug up again.

Landing

Sarpo Mira potatoes are planted at the end of May. Planting is carried out using holes or trenches. The depth of the backlog should reach 5-8 cm. Manure is poured into the bottom of each hole. Potato varieties are planted at a distance of 30 cm between tubers and 50-60 cm between beds. Such planting will not be difficult when carrying out agrotechnical procedures.

Care

Sarpo Mira potatoes require standard agrotechnical procedures: watering, fertilizing, hilling and loosening. The following describes the characteristics of all care processes

Watering works

Potatoes need moderate regular watering. Water the beds with bushes of the variety in the evening. It is recommended to water the soil several times during the cultivation period.

Top dressing

Fertilize the soil with Sarpo Mira potatoes 2 times per season. The soil is fed with organic and mineral components. The first feeding is carried out during the formation of the bushes, and the second - at the moment of flowering of the potatoes.

In addition to manure and compost, the soil is fed with complex fertilizers.

Hilling and loosening

It is necessary to hill up and loosen the soil with the Sarpo Mira variety after watering. The procedures allow you to remove the top layer of soil, which impedes the passage of oxygen and moisture to the roots of the potato. In addition, hilling helps strengthen the main root of the plant.

Diseases and pests

The Sarpo Mira variety is highly resistant to late blight. However, improper planting and incorrect agrotechnical procedures contribute to the formation of brown rot and black leg. Below are the characteristics of the pathologies.

Brown rot

Brown rot is the most dangerous pathology of the crop, as a result of which the color of the tops changes to dark brown, and the foliage begins to curl and wither. In this case, the fruits become covered with brown circles, from which white mucus flows.

It is impossible to cure a root crop from a disease. However, experts note that the chemical preparations “Grifon” and “Rovral” can save you from the disease if you treat the tubers with them before planting.

Blackleg

Black leg is one of the common infections that affects the tubers and tops of Sarpo Mira bushes. The disease appears after the formation of sprouts: the foliage turns yellow, begins to curl, and the stem turns black. Ultimately, the tubers also succumb to pathology and rot. To prevent infection with blackleg, the tubers of the variety are treated with Integral or Maxim substances.

Harvesting and storage

2 weeks before harvesting, the tops of the variety bushes are mowed down. During this period, all watering work stops. It is recommended to collect fruits in dry, sunny weather. After digging up the potatoes, the root crop is sorted (it is necessary to select fruits suitable for storage and remove cut or rotten ones) and put them in the shade to dry.

Sarpo Mira potatoes must be stored in a cool room at temperatures up to 4 degrees. The fruits of the variety are stored in the basement or cellar. Potatoes are poured onto the laid floor. It is not recommended to store tubers in closed containers to prevent the crop from rotting.

Unique potato variety Unica

In the spring of 2021, they sent me Unica potatoes from the south of Siberia. The seller was sincerely surprised why I needed it, there was nothing special about it! But Unika somehow “hooked” me, and I decided to try to grow it. All I knew about him was that he was very moisture-loving, with tall tops. I planted it, like all my varieties, in a bed 1.5 m wide in two rows.

In 2021 we had very little rain in June and July. I watered the potatoes 3-4 times. Finally, in August, heavy rains began. And my Unica grew and blossomed until the very end. The length of the stems reached 120 cm. The powerful tops were dark green. The end of September came and it was necessary to harvest the potatoes, because in October we already have frosts. Unika stood still as green and did not think about ending the growing season. She began to dig up the harvest. And then a big surprise awaited me! There were huge raspberry tubers in the ground, 700-900 g each! When I dug up the first bush, I immediately ran to weigh it - it turned out to be 5 kg! I have never had such a harvest. And this is without any additional feeding. Moreover, there were no white lentils on the tubers, which indicate a lack of oxygen. I understood why this variety fails in the south of Siberia - summers there are hot and short, there is almost no rain. And Unika needs increased humidity of the earth and air.

2018 turned out to be a dry year. But I watered the potatoes and did foliar fertilizing so that they could more easily withstand the drought. That year, the Unica harvest was slightly lower and the tubers were smaller - 400-700 g each.

Well, in 2021 it was the other way around. From the end of May, throughout June and July, there were constant rains, which ended only on August 12. And only Unica did not succumb to late blight. Once again, at the end of September, it was time to harvest the potatoes. The tubers were simply a sight for sore eyes: all of them were large, some even grew a little more than 1 kg!

If you have this variety, you will never be left without a harvest. There are no scabs, ulcers or specks on them. The flesh of this variety is deep yellow. Potatoes cook quickly. You can cook any dishes from it. The taste is excellent.

Where did such a unique variety come from? He is originally from Peru and was brought to Omsk by one of the officials of the Omsk administration. And now, gradually, this Peruvian variety is conquering the vast expanses of Russia!

SOME FEATURES OF GROWING THIS VARIETY

One bush occupies an area of about 1 sq.m, or even more, so planting is sparse. I make a bed 30-40 cm high and 1 meter wide if I plant it in one row. If in two rows, then the width of the ridge should be 1.5 m. I apply fertilizers and fertilizing, as for other varieties of potatoes, but the more often the better.

The Unica variety will be happy if you decide to water it at least every day. It does not have rotten tubers or with cracked hollows. It is better not to hill up the bushes, because long stolons can be trimmed.
